Welcome to the 5th issue of “Next” Newsletter. "Next" encapsulates my aspiration of researching and sharing the vision of what comes after today in Business and in Technology. This newsletter is a platform where I'll distill my findings and share my insights, drawing upon various topics within business, technology, and digital transformation.

The content of “Next” will unfold in a series of articles, each one peeling back the layers of a chosen theme. The current series of articles focus on “The AI Shift” affecting the world around us. I will specifically focus on knowledge economy, and knowledge work, exploring the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in redefining it. Let us embrace the 'Next'!

In the first four issues, we looked into the fundamental definitions of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Generative AI (GenAI), their differences, the meaning and use of 'Prompts' and 'Generations' and an introduction to what GenAI can do. In this issue, we will look into One of the core uses of Generative AI: Creation of Text Content.

Generative AI, particularly in the realm of text generation, has made significant strides in the last few years, evolving from simple, rule-based systems to sophisticated models capable of generating human-like text based on a given prompt. These advanced algorithms can produce everything from poems and articles to technical manuals and interactive conversations. By leveraging massive datasets and intricate neural network architectures, Generative AI models analyze patterns in language, style, and information structure to output text that is not only coherent and contextually relevant, but often indistinguishable from content written by humans. As we delve deeper into the capabilities and applications of this technology, it is essential to spotlight one of the most celebrated and contentious examples in this space: ChatGPT by OpenAI.

What is ChatGPT?

The attention to GenAI and its applications has skyrocketed since the introduction of ChatGPT by OpenAI. ChatGPT ‒ or Generative Pre-training Transformer, a revolutionary AI technology, is developed by a research laboratory based in San Francisco named OpenAI that can generate human-like conversations and responses. ChatGPT is an advanced natural language processing (NLP) system designed to emulate conversation with humans.

ChatGPT and most NLP systems utilize a deep learning model based on the Transformer architecture to generate conversational responses in real-time. By leveraging the power of machine learning algorithms and sophisticated linguistic datasets, ChatGPT can accurately interpret user input (prompt) and generate appropriate answers (generation) that mimic human interaction. The system also enables contextual awareness, allowing it to build a virtual context where users can converse naturally and intuitively.

ChatGPT can be used to generate natural language responses to questions. For example, when asked 'What is the capital of The Netherlands?', ChatGPT can generate the response 'The capital of The Netherlands is Amsterdam.', and continue asking it, 'What is great about it?', it understands the context and will continue 'Amsterdam is a city with a rich history, beautiful architecture, and a vibrant culture. It is known for its iconic canals, museums...'.

There are already many examples of what you may be able to achieve with ChatGPT out there. From doing complete research using the tool to creating a trading bot that enables you to make automatic investments, people have tried to test various automations using the amazing knowledge at their fingertips brought by ChatGPT. With so much possibility, it is no surprise that it took only five days for the tool to reach one million users after public access to ChatGPT user interface was introduced in November 2022.

What is Google Bard?

Bard is another conversational generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Google. It was developed as a direct response to the rise of OpenAI's ChatGPT and was released in a limited capacity in March 2023 before expanding to other countries in May. Like ChatGPT, Bard can respond to a user's question (prompts) or any subject with human-like understanding.

Powered by Google's Pathways Language Model (PaLM 2), Bard was trained on a massive dataset, including Common Crawl, Wikipedia, The World Factbook and conversations and dialogues from the web. The primary difference between Bard and ChatGPT is that Bard can also access and process information through Google Search, so you can get up-to-date information instead of living in 2021, unlike current versions of ChatGPT which are trained based on data until September 2021.

Unlike Google Search, with Bard, you don't have to check various pages, click through different links, or compare news articles. You can just ask Bard a question, get a summarized version of what you're after, then ask follow-up questions if you need more information. It's certainly far from perfect right now, but you can imagine how Bard may eventually change the way search works.

ChatGPT and Bard are just two examples from various GenAI tools able to generate text. There are both few other GenAI engines such as ChatGPT and Bard, but also tens of solutions build using one of these engines as their backbone.

How To Use Generative AI Text Generation in Your Work

The omnipresence of GenAI is undeniably felt, not only in large-scale operations but also in our daily professional work. Let's explore some of these seemingly mundane tasks that have been profoundly transformed with the use of GenAI.

In the era of GenAI, the shift from merely searching to researching has never been more significant. Simple search engine inquiries are replaced with more comprehensive, AI-aided research. GenAI helps in collating information, analyzing data, and even summarizing key points, making the process of gathering and understanding information much more efficient and thorough. You can learn to do all this with the assistance of a GenAI tool such as ChatGPT or others.

Communication, an indispensable aspect of our professional lives, is greatly influenced by GenAI. For instance, drafting emails or letters can be expedited by GenAI tools that generate complete sentences or even paragraphs based on a few input keywords. This not only saves time but also ensures that the communication is professional, accurate, and engaging. Microsoft Copilot is a revolution in this respect. But even before having the MS-Copilot on all computers, there are many other solutions out in the market which can give you a head start.

GenAI proves to be a game-changer when it comes to generating proposals and other business documents, such as sales pitches or business plans. It can assist in structuring these documents, provide relevant data, and even offer suggestions to enhance their impact. This ensures your documents are not just well-crafted but also backed by relevant information and data.

Another prominent area where GenAI can prove invaluable is in the creation or editing of procedural documents such as work instructions or manuals. These documents require precision, clarity and conciseness - attributes that can be enhanced with the assistance of GenAI. It can ensure the information is easily comprehensible, well-structured, and devoid of any ambiguity. Off the shelf, AI tools are capable of writing, editing, improving and auditing documents and procedures to suggest risks, improvement opportunities and other modifications.

Moreover, GenAI can help you shape compelling viewpoints and arguments by providing relevant facts and data. Whether you're preparing a presentation, participating in a debate, or simply needing to convince a client, GenAI can provide you with the necessary ammunition to make your case. Here, being trained as a prompt expert can go a long way. In addition, using automatic content generators and slide generators can save you significant time, allowing you to concentrate on the core message and content rather than getting bogged down by specific words and styles. Special tools can even review a legal document for you and give you advice on risks and needed improvements before approaching a lawyer for a final review.

These are just some of the ways in which GenAI can be used in your daily professional work. The possibilities are immense and only limited by one's imagination.
