AI and technology at the forefront of the energy transition

November was an exciting month at Energy Connects, kicking off with our team heading to Abu Dhabi for ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference 2024, where we explored the forefront of energy innovations. Mid-month, global leaders gathered in Baku, for COP29 Azerbaijan , where the Presidency unveiled the transformative Baku Finance Goal - a commitment to mobilise $1.3 trillion annually for climate finance and $1 trillion through carbon markets by 2050.

Technology and innovation were recurring themes this month. In exclusive interviews, Simon Flowers , Chairman and Chief Analyst at Wood Mackenzie , expanded on the challenges and opportunities in natural gas and LNG, noting the significant potential of AI, carbon capture, and white hydrogen in driving low-carbon energy solutions. Adding to this narrative, Peter Parry , Chairman of Global Energy and Natural Resources at Bain & Company , shared key trends for 2025, emphasising energy security, the transformative role of AI, and how companies are balancing production with decarbonization to achieve their net-zero goals.

Similarly, Athmane BENZERROUG , Chief Strategy, Transformation & Sustainability Officer of ADNOC Distribution , detailed how the company’s 20+ AI-driven initiatives are revolutionising its value chain, delivering record financial performance, and enhancing customer experiences. Saravan Penubarthi , CTO at AIQ , highlighted the evolution of AI and AIQ’s transformative collaboration with ADNOC, unveiling the world’s largest agentic AI project that cuts project timelines from months to minutes.

On the sustainability front, Balaji Krishnamurthy , Vice President at Chevron Technical Center, underscored the importance of methane reduction, carbon capture, and renewable fuels in achieving a balanced energy transition, highlighting the role of partnerships in delivering affordable, low-carbon energy solutions. Further to that Boston Consulting Group (BCG) ’s Martha Vasquez and Jaime Ruiz-Cabrero outlined a six-step roadmap for achieving near-zero methane emissions by 2030.

Complementing these industry insights, our columnist Robin Mills highlights how the break-even oil price highlights fiscal pressures for oil-exporting nations but oversimplifies their complex economic and energy transition challenges.
