AI in the Workplace: A Dream Come True or Just More Work in Disguise?

AI in the Workplace: A Dream Come True or Just More Work in Disguise?

Hi folks,

So, here’s a thought that's been bouncing around in my head—will the rise of AI in our workplaces be the ticket to happier, more fulfilling work lives, or are we just trading one set of mundane tasks for another? I mean, on one hand, you’ve got AI stepping in to handle the soul-sucking stuff—data entry, endless reports, those repetitive tasks that make you feel like you’re stuck in some kind of office-based Groundhog Day. Sounds like a win, right?

But then there’s that little voice in the back of my head- the devil on my shoulder if you will- that says, "What if employers just find new ways to fill employees time?" I’m not saying they’re evil geniuses, but let’s face it, history shows us that when one task disappears, another one usually pops up to take its place.

So, which is it going to be?

Let’s look at what the numbers say. A recent McKinsey report suggests that AI could automate 45% of the activities people are paid to do today. That’s a huge chunk of the day freed up from the clutches of spreadsheets and reports! The idea is that this gives employees more time to focus on creative, strategic, and interpersonal aspects of their jobs—the stuff that’s actually fun and engaging. Imagine a world where you spend less time fiddling with Excel and more time solving problems that really make a difference.

Imagine, a world where people are encouraged to think in new ways, break free from meaningless corporate nonsense and get this – BE HAPPY.

But here’s the kicker: another survey from Gartner reveals that 60% of employees fear that automation might lead to increased pressure to perform more tasks or hit higher targets. It's almost like the workforce is collectively asking, "If AI takes over the boring stuff, are we just going to get buried under a new pile of ‘high-value’ tasks?"

Personally, I’m rooting for the optimistic side—less busywork and more meaningful work sounds like a dream come true. But I can’t help but wonder if we might need to brace ourselves for the possibility of employers finding other ways to keep us on our toes (or glued to our desks).

I guess only time will tell whether AI becomes our new best friend or just another way to keep us chained to our office chairs. Either way, we might as well buckle up for the ride.

Until next time,

Hi Lukas, Great article. When it comes to recruiting, I don’t think artificial intelligence will ever trump emotional intelligence. However in my experience when you pair the two together it can lead to a slicker, more In-depth, cost effective, streamlined process which I found a win win for all. None of it is a corner cutting exercise and the key is selecting what works and marrying it up, leaving AI to do it’s thing and us humans to apply that much valued human touch. 💪 All the best, Russ
