Airports Are Missing the Mark on EV Charging

Recently Belfast Airport and Gatwick Airport announced news about their EV charging infrastructure efforts and while this is an important piece of infrastructure for the airports, we feel there is a huge missed opportunity that no one seems to be talking about.

Airports are prioritizing fast DC charging for drop-offs but neglecting crucial long-term EV charging solutions. Many airports lack sufficient overnight or multi-day charging options. Current setups mostly feature fast DC chargers or 22 kW chargers, which fully charge EVs in less than four hours, leading to overstay fees and underutilization.

The Importance of Long-Term Airport EV Charging

The EV market is growing, driven by better batteries, performance, and affordability. Airports play a pivotal role in providing the necessary EV infrastructure due to their strategic locations and high traffic. Yet, many are not equipped to handle the varied needs of EV drivers, especially those leaving their cars for extended periods.
