What We’re Watching

Rockies Storm Organizes as East Coast System Departs: Heading into Thanksgiving Day, improving weather conditions are likely across the Eastern United States. Meanwhile, the first notable snowstorm of the season will start to develop over parts of the Rockies and Plains.

  • Wednesday’s travel from New England to the Carolinas and Georgia experienced a wet and unsettled start. Low clouds and windy conditions caused flight delays at major hubs like Philadelphia International and LaGuardia. Fortunately, good weather is expected as dry conditions return to the country’s eastern half on Wednesday night and persist into Thanksgiving Day.
  • The forecast turns more problematic across the Northern and Central Rockies. Wednesday night through Saturday morning, widespread snow showers will blanket areas from Central Montana southward into Wyoming, Colorado, and western portions of Nebraska and Kansas.
  • Denver is expected to receive 3-5 inches of snow, while Wyoming may see over 5-10 inches, with high winds causing potential disruptions to interstate travel. Anticipate increasing travel disruptions heading into Black Friday, and the number of Winter Storm Alerts currently in effect will likely rise.

Colder and Stormier Weather in Eastern and Central Europe through Late November: Much of Europe will likely have a milder-than-average winter this year. However, the next ten days look polar opposite, with below-average temperatures and multiple snowstorms looming.

  • Wednesday night saw widespread snow, ice, and wind warnings from Finland southward into Poland. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania faced the risk of blizzard conditions, with the forecast predicting a couple of inches of accumulating snow and gale-force winds in some locations.
  • Late Thursday into Friday, a significant change in the regional weather pattern will usher scattered snow showers, blustery conditions, and much cooler weather into areas as far west as France and Belgium.
  • Over the weekend, forecast models indicate that a major winter storm could develop over the Balkan Peninsula before lifting northeast into portions of Ukraine. Long-term cold or heavy snow could be highly problematic for the nation and its weakened power grid

Demonstrations Expected Worldwide for International Day Against Gender-Based Violence: Large crowds are expected in several countries on Saturday, November 25, during the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

  • In Spain, once-unified women’s rights groups have splintered over trans rights legislation. (Please note that this link is in Spanish.) Two marches organized by separate groups will take over central Madrid and lead to localized disruptions. France will see widespread demonstrations as trade unions will join women’s rights groups to call for an end to gender-based violence.
  • Mexico City will also see two demonstrations, led by relatives of victims of femicide, that will both end at the Plaza de la Constitución (Zócalo) in the afternoon through the evening. Mobilizations are expected in major cities in other Mexican states. (Please note that this link is in Spanish.)
  • Recent years have seen large turnouts, spurred by media reports on incidents of violence against women and children. In Tbilisi, Georgia, demonstrators will gather at First Republic Square on November 25 for a march against child marriage and violence against women after a 14-year-old girl died after a forced marriage earlier this year.

Demonstrations Over Israel-Hamas War to Continue Despite Planned Pause in Fighting: Organizers behind the “Shut it Down for Palestine” movement have called for another day of action on Black Friday, targeting major shopping centers. In New York, demonstrators are expected to hold gatherings coinciding with the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

  • Calls have rallied along the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade route, including at its traditional endpoint, Herald Square, beginning in the early morning. Expect heavy security in the parade areas.
  • Several groups have also called for Friday demonstrations at malls and other busy shopping areas. The AlertMedia team has surfaced calls for demonstrations at Dallas’ NorthPark Mall, San Diego’s Fashion Valley Mall, and Somerset Mall in the Detroit suburb of Troy. Additional actions are likely.
  • Large demonstrations are expected in major capitals through the weekend. In Washington, D.C., on Friday, a group plans to gather near the Foggy Bottom Metro at 1:00 pm. Ottawa will likely see thousands descend on Parliament Hill at 1:00 pm Saturday, and demonstrators in London intend to hold another National March for Palestine the same day, gathering on Park Lane at 12:30 pm.
