All about Audi in April: D(r)ive in with us

In this month’s newsletter, read why our new factory in China sets new standards, what makes the Brand Group Progressive a strong team and how premium charging with Audi became even more global. Also included: Ducati’s Chief Test Rider and the Technical Project Manager of the Audi e-tron GT* talking shop as well as an interview on mental health at Audi.

Chief Production Officer Gerd Walker on our new electric car factory in Changchun, China

1. From the end of 2024, Audi will be building all-electric cars at the new factory in Changchun. Is the plant already up and running?

Yes, everything is going according to plan. Currently, we are testing production steps during pre-production. By the end of the year, series production will start with three models from the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron series. Among them is the Audi Q6L e-tron. It is a China-specific model, the exterior of which we recently unveiled at Auto China in Beijing.

2. The factory in Changchun is at the highest digital and sustainable level. What are its special features?

From the start, Audi has planned the production facilities using digital methods and tools. All processes will be linked up and controlled by a single IT architecture. Intelligent fault detection, real-time monitoring, and prediction algorithms make production more reliable. Sustainability is also built-in: The site has a closed water cycle and only uses green energy. Hence, production will be net-carbon neutral.

3. Audi has factories around the world. What are the advantages of a global production network?

Three factors play a role here: Firstly, we can produce tailor-made models locally for the respective markets. Secondly, we have greater resilience in our supply chain and can respond to geopolitical challenges better. Thirdly, we are reducing the distance we ship completed vehicles and can therefore deliver them more sustainably.

Audi and the Brand Group Progressive: a strong team

Delivering premium mobility, stunning vehicles, and thrilling drives to passionate customers is what everyone at Audi lives for.

This is why we are happy to have strong teammates in our corner – the members of the Brand Group Progressive: Bentley Motors, Lamborghini S.p.A., and Ducati Motor Holding are all more than iconic in their own right.

All brands’ strong economic performances also form the basis for us to tackle the electric and digital transformations together. Last year, Lamborghini achieved new record figures, while both Bentley and Ducati solidified the successes of recent years.

We also share ideas and technologies we develop with each other. However, what might be even more important is the inspiration we get from working together. For example, Ducati’s success in MotoGP is a role model for Audi as we get ready for Formula 1.

Audi e-tron GT prototype x Ducati Panigale V4 R2

Aren’t they eye-catching? The prototype for the Audi e-tron GT family and the Ducati Panigale V4 R2 are the pinnacle of technology and passion from their respective brands.

Even though the two brands build very different vehicles, both can take ideas from each other. The Panigale V4 R2 features the Ducati Slide Control with Spin on Demand function, a dynamic traction control that allows oversteer – like Drift Mode on Audi RS models.

Recently, Ducati Chief Test Rider Alessandro Valia and Jaan Mattes Reiling, Technical Project Manager of the Audi e-tron GT model family, met up and talked shop.

Premium charging with Audi is becoming even more global

The availability of convenient and powerful charging points is an important prerequisite for the global adoption of electric vehicles. When it comes to making this a reality, we at Audi have been at the fore.

1. We are working with industry partners like Ionity in Europe to establish a dense network of charging stations along highways, turning electrically powered long-distance travel into the new normal.

2. We are expanding our network of Audi charging hubs. They provide fast charging in an urban environment and are designed to make users’ stay a great experience beyond charging.

Speaking of urban settings… There are few cities as iconic as Tokyo – and that makes Japan’s capital the perfect place for our newest Audi charging hub.

Stay mentally healthy with Audi

At the four rings, mental health is a top priority. Three questions to Dr. Andreas Haller, Head of Audi Occupational Health:

1. Why is the mental health of employees such an important issue for Audi?

Jobs are becoming increasingly complex. The flood of information in today’s working world is enormous, which can affect people mentally.

2. How does Audi react to that?

With various measures: We’ve launched a comprehensive program to raise awareness of mental health a few years ago. In addition, we added mental health checkups to our preventive healthcare program. It paid off: We were able to significantly reduce the symptoms of stress.

3. Does Audi also address the issue culturally?

Definitely. For example, we have trained 90 employees from various departments as “health guides”. We are also raising the awareness of managers since they are often employees’ first point of contact. Everybody needs to be involved in the solution and we are making sure they can.

Influencers and journalists in China get up close with the Audi Q6L e-tron during a sneak preview ahead of the car’s unveiling at Auto China 2024. The Q6L e-tron is a tailored variant of the Q6 e-tron for the Chinese market only.

AUDI AG knowing your electric cars are to be made in China has now put me off them. I think you are wrong to move production there. My wife and I were interested in the Volvo EX30 until we discovered it is made in China.
