ALTA Tutor Talks
Last week, we outlined the steps to become an ALTA tutor. For those who have always wanted to volunteer but wondered about the experience, we present the perspectives of two new ALTA tutors. They share what motived them to become tutors, their training journey, and the personal impact it has had on their lives.
Lise de Montrichard
I can’t fathom how difficult it must be for someone to navigate the world, for example, on a road, without being able to read the signs. Years ago, when I was a teenager, I was working across from the Licensing Authority. A gentleman came over to me for help filling out his renewal form. I filled it out for him, not even realising that he couldn’t read the form. Only recently I thought, ‘If he filled out this form, he must have a driver’s license.’ How did he take the test? How does he manoeuvre the world and get a license? I can’t imagine living in a world where I don’t understand what’s happening around me. I have realised how much I have taken for granted.
I am most looking forward to meeting the students. I want to instill a positive attitude towards reading in them and encourage them so they don’t think, ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘I won’t be able to do this,’ and then watch their growth.
I am Lise, I am an ALTA tutor, and we are an ALTAnation!

Last year, while assisting with a camp, I met a young man who was having challenges reading. My mother was a teacher, and I remember observing her teaching phonics. I tried to use that recollection to help him as best as I could. I was winging it and wanted to provide him with a better-structured learning experience. So, I decided to join ALTA to learn from people who know how to teach adults. That’s when an ALTA advertisement I had seen came back to mind.

From my first day observing an ALTA class, I realised it was very structured. When I attended the training, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-coordinated and prepared ALTA was. There were so many aspects I didn’t realise were important when learning the English language. ALTA truly knows what they are doing.
What makes the experience even better is that students don’t feel judged. Instead, they feel supported; it’s a collaborative effort where we all learn from each other. The ALTA experience is truly enriching.

Becoming an ALTA tutor not only transforms the lives of students but also enriches the lives of the tutors themselves. Through shared experiences, encouragement, and a supportive learning environment, ALTA fosters a community dedicated to literacy and personal growth. Whether you want to teach, learn, or support, there’s a place for you in the ALTAnation.
