Amazon is the Tom Brady of Retail
Let me just point out the obvious here, Amazon is entering GOAT retail brand territory. While NFL ratings may be slumping with Tom Brady as one of its last marketable assets, for Amazon, things never looked better.
Amazon's star QB also has a name, and she doesn't even lose her voice in the real world.
Amazon's Q4 results show just how spectacular a holiday season it had. Amazon basically won the superbowl of Holiday shopping.
Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) is now at 1,440.78 if you can believe it. It's destined to become the second Trillion dollar company after Apple.
Amazon Prime raked in 4M trials in one holiday week. Do you want to follow Amazon News, just follow Sarah Perez on TechCrunch and Daphne Howland on Retail Dive.
Mobile shopping this year was up nearly 70%, and Amazon earned 55% of Black Friday online orders. The popularity of the Wish app is also a true barometer of mobile shopping ubiquity. It turns out shopping online is pretty fun, and not just in stores.
Shopping is so fun, the likes of Snapchat, Ebay and Mashable are launching shoppable content. A plethora of new social apps that facilitate new ways to shop are coming to market, witness the teen-centric app Yeay. New apps that combine retail, branding, influencers and altcoins could disrupt mobile commerce in the years to come.
With Alexa, Amazon Prime users will be spending more in 2018. Voice activated shopping means how we even shop mobile is changing. Between Amazon's AR view to its new 10-dollar or less discount site, mobile commerce is quickly evolving.
The company's much-touted Alexa was used much more this holiday season for a variety of tasks. If Google Home devices sold in the area of 6 million this Holiday season, Alexa operated devices probably sold in the area of 3x to 4x as many. Amazon just said it sold "tens of millions" of devices. Smart speaker penetration when you add Apple, Samsung and others to the mix, will be incredibly high even by 2019.
Amazon is entering GOAT territory in retail, and like Tom Brady, there's no sign of them slowing down.
With Amazon Prime members spending around double what Non-prime members spend, you have to realize how Amazon will win the future of advertising. If a Facebook user in North America is about $25.00 for the company, the average U.S. Prime customer is worth closer to $1,300. As Amazon makes more of a social play, and as Alexa becomes even more ubiquitous (smart glasses), we can expect more retail Holiday wins from Amazon for the Prime Team.
And, we're all invited in that A-Z game plan.
Amazon Q4 Results
Amazon reported earnings of $3.75 per share and revenue of $60.5 billion for the fourth quarter. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 38% from the year-ago period.
Amazon's cloud-computing revenue income soared 38%. It's HQ2 public relations RFP story garned millions of views in free traffic, as cities battled it out now down to the top 20.
According to analysts, top-line results beat Wall Street's expectation and the bottom line crushed the consensus estimate.
So much for a good fourth quarter, Tom Brady didn't win the Superbowl, but he already has five championships. For Amazon, the fun is just beginning.

7yGreat summary, Michael. Jeff Bezos is certainly "in it to win it." Along with Alibaba and JD.com (and AI investments), Amazon is creating lofty standards for the future of global retail.

7ySo the future of retail is gaining market share by selling a lot of stuff at a loss, while surviving because of an unrelated cloud computing business ?
