AMS Behavior: Support (5/7) - Documented Information

This article focuses on the Asset Management System (AMS) support function – documented information.  AMS documented information requirements are 100% defined by the organization’s asset management policy.  Organizations with a mature asset management approach will use ISO 55001 requirements to confirm the organization’s asset management policy has identified minimum documented information objectives and requirements.  The desired AMS behavior related to documented information is that it establishes a balanced approach to identify and satisfy documented information requirements and does so with a net positive benefit in terms of achieving Organizational Objectives.

The documented information support function is different than the preceding four support functions: resources, competence, awareness, and communication.  Previous support functions are leading, enabling capabilities.  Documented information is more of a follow through capability.  This doesn’t mean that documented information is less important.  It, like other support functions, has a unique roll in the management of assets, AMS operations, and the organization’s approach to asset management.

The best way to approach identification of documented information requirements is through the organization’s Asset Management (AM) Framework that is defined in the organization’s AMS policy and shown below.

Asset Management Framework

The balance of this article will lead to how this AM Framework can clarify and streamline implementation of documented information requirements.
