"For those of us who lean Type-A, it’s common to fall into the trap of comparison. Have I achieved my desired level of success (by “x” age) compared to my peers? Have I met the achievement standards I expect for myself? And what do success and achievement really mean?

A recent coachee described this as a constant feeling of needing to be the best at all the things— and if you’re not told or objectively determined to be the best, then you’re a complete failure.

Most of us know this is a never-ending toxic loop. Turns out, life isn’t a competition. There are no gold stars awarded on our deathbed.

The practice of mindfulness is often the antidote to the compare-and-despair cycle. Being present and expressing gratitude can counteract the urge to obsess over evaluating ourselves against others (or our own benchmarks). But I’ve found applying creativity to be an even more compelling way to defend against the act of comparison.

Expressing our creativity can:

*Expand our empathy for others

*Heighten our senses

*Ground us to our purpose (or reveal it)

*Boost our mood

*Activate our flow state

*Shift our perspective to discover new solutions

*Awaken our self-compassion

Whether you’re doodling for a few minutes on the corner of your notebook, composing a song on your morning commute, taking an improv class, or simply looking at a problem in a new light, creative expression can do more for us than we may predict. It may jolt us out of despair into savoring the present moment. It could help us reexamine what it truly means to live a good life. And there’s no comparison to that."

Love this Robert! Creativity bubbles up hope, openness, energy, wisdom, and the ability to dream and take stock of our current context. It shines a light on a new perspective or finding a "third way" to do something. It can help us get "unstuck" and definitely move away from spiraling into comparisons.
