Another week, another ‘Wave’ 🗞️
Welcome back! It’s the first ‘Wave’ of 2023 🗞 - 5 news items from the world of work and workplace that you can digest in 5 minutes.
This week we’re taking a look at the future of work and some predictions for the year ahead…
Coworking Megatrends: GCUC - Global Coworking Unconference Community 's Founder Liz Elam gave her view on the megatrends of 2023, including predicting the “real estate reckoning 2.0”. “We are four years away from the majority of US leases coming up for renewal. I believe that we will see the majority (yes, majority) of businesses choose to let go of a large portion of their commercial leases in favor of letting employees work from wherever they choose. Large commercial real estate companies have tried and for the most part failed to launch coworking/flex brands. They all have “flex teams” but they’re not moving the dial in a meaningful way. It doesn’t look for good real estate. This is an industry ripe for disruption.” Liz was dead on with her predictions for 2022… Read Full Article.
Lucky to have a Job: Will the economic downturn put an end to post-Covid work trends? The latest Financial Times ‘Working It’ podcast ep takes a look at 2023 predictions. “I don’t think workers are going to be eager to give up the patterns that they’ve established over the past couple of years when it comes to working remotely and working hybrid,” said Taylor Nicole Rogers . “But if we get into a scenario where employers are laying off people en masse, kind of like we’ve seen in tech and media, I wouldn’t be surprised if more and more CEOs started to say, “You know what, you’re lucky to have a job. There’s nowhere else you can go if I make a decision you don’t like. So now we’re gonna do things my way”. We’ve already started to see some of that in Silicon Valley.” Read Full Article.

Word of the Year: The Economist word of 2022 was ‘Hybrid Work’, stating: “Working at home some of the time has advantages (decongesting cities and fewer painful commutes), and disadvantages (fears of lower productivity combined with a sense of never being off duty). But most firms have not gone to either extreme, instead trying to find the best of both worlds. As a coinage, hybrid work is no beauty. But it will reshape cities, careers, family life and free time. That is ample qualification for a word of the year.” Long may it continue into 2023. Read Full Article.
Work-Life Blend: Michel-Claude Fiechter of TPG Architecture explores why the future of work is not about work-life-balance, it’s about work-life blend. “Work-life blend recognizes our need to disconnect from work and reframe our choices within the context of our personal lives. It also acknowledges the importance of physical space in determining our wellbeing, particularly for those who have been working from home for an extended period of time. The office serves as a barrier between work and home life, allowing us to make the most of our time at home with loved ones instead of just focusing on work.” Read Full Article.
Issues to Address: Burnout, flexible work and a people-first work culture are major trends that all need addressing in 2023, according to Forbes . Chief People Scientist at Energage , Greg Barnett explained that when it comes to topics of performance, burn-out, wellbeing or psychological safety, HR data can be used to identify early signs of problems and proactively build more reliable models to pinpoint turnover intentions or performance issues sooner. “Companies can only begin to make effective changes after they identify their core problems,” he said. “HR data allows them to identify, evaluate and eventually implement changes which lead to a more productive and motivated workforce.” Read Full Article.
