Apple’s New Thing

Apple’s New Thing

Winner: Wikipedia. If your brand doesn’t have a Wikipedia page, it’s losing out: one of the 10 most popular websites in the world, the online encyclopedia consistently appears in the top organic search results for brand-related terms.

Loser: Shinola. While the brand has become synonymous with Detroit’s revitalization, its “Built in Detroit” tagline was recently ruled inaccurate by U.S. regulators.

Winner: Cellular networks, which are adding more connected car accounts than phones. Apple is also establishing itself as a major player in the growing industry.

Loser: Goldman Sachs. An analysis of New York Times wedding announcements since 1981 reveals that more successful young people are now working at Google than the elite financial institution.

Interesting points, however, the comparison of R&D investments is not fair: you are taking Apple's car R&D and comparing it with only-connectd-car R&D from car manufacturers. The truth is, Apples's investment on car R&D is not only for the connected car but to get a car to market. VW's R&D budget is +13B, far exceeding that of Apple.

The brand power of Wikipedia has consistently been underrated and yet it serves as a model for open-source crowd-funded content platform. It's a living proof of the viability of a non-monetized method for content creation and distribution - a perfect blend of democratization and socialization. I'm betting this is the future of content creation and consumption.
