Are Applicant Tracking Systems Eating Your Resume?

Are Applicant Tracking Systems Eating Your Resume?

It's easy to imagine that resume screening databases are using your resume as a midnight snack.

After all, Applicant Tracking Systems work hard, screening out hundreds or even thousands of resumes, so that just a few are seen by humans ... of course they get hungry. And your resume looks like the cure to their nighttime munchies.

It's got to be the ATS that's keeping your resume from human eyes, because other humans have told you that your resume is good, and why wouldn't a recruiter be interested in your exciting career story?

But what if it's not the Applicant Tracking System that's keeping you from getting interviews?

What if it's a (gasp!) human being that is screening you out? How could that happen? You're awesome! You're not alone ... on average, human review screens out 85% of the resumes that make it through Applicant Tracking Systems. That's right, only 15% of the resumes that get through resume screening databases actually get interviews.

Here are a few reasons ATSs might not be blocking your resume, but something (or someone) else is:

  1. Your Resume Creates A Confusing First Impression: Human reviewers make their first decision on your resume in an average 6 seconds. If your resume starts out by telling your reader all the things you can do, it creates a confusing first impression, that forces your reader hunt to see if you're worth interviewing. And in 6 seconds, they aren't taking the time to hunt ... they're moving to the next resume.
  2. You've Got The Right Keywords, But Your Story Is Meh: If your story doesn't catch your reader's attention in an average 15 seconds, human readers move on to the next resume.
  3. Your Resume Doesn't Mitigate Risks You Present: Your difficult job search challenges appear as risks to employers. Things like unemployment, age 40/50/60+, career/industry/geographic change, seeking remote position/raise/promotion, long term gaps, "bouncy" recent career are perceived as risks by employers. If you don't recognize and mitigate these risks, you're getting screened out by real people who are looking for less risky new hires.

You'll notice none of these have anything to do with how well qualified you are, your skills, or the extent of your experience.

These are some common reasons recruiters and hiring manager screen out resumes that get through ATSs, and they probably also affect your resume without you realizing it. Even if you've had your resume professionally written, or your friends/mentors have told you that your resume is good, it probably includes at least one of these three reasons that cause readers to dump your resume and move on to the next.

I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including job search acceleration, getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
