April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month

As we observe Distracted Driver Awareness Month, it is important to understand the risks and consequences of distracted driving. Distracted driving is defined as any activity that diverts the driver's attention. The National Safety Council (NSC) launched this initiative to educate people on the importance of focusing on the road while driving. The month-long campaign is meant to educate and direct the public's attention to the effects of distracted driving and to encourage safer driving habits.

Statistics on Dangers of Distracted Driving

As of 2022, over two hundred eighty-four million vehicles were on the road throughout the United States. In terms of distracted driving within the United States, an average of nine people lose their lives to car accidents, with a national average of over three thousand individuals in one year – that's nearly nine percent of all fatal crashes. For commercial vehicles, nearly seventy-one percent of accidents occur due to distracted driving. These alarming statistics make it clear that distracted driving is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

Federal Driving Regulations

To address the issue of distracted driving, it is essential to highlight the various forms of legislation at the federal and state levels. At the federal level, the Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recognizes the dangers of distractions on the road, particularly for commercial drivers. As a result, the FMCSA has enacted strict regulations prohibiting commercial vehicle drivers from driving under the influence and using handheld devices, including mobile phones, while operating their vehicles. These regulations aim to prevent distractions and promote the safety of drivers, passengers, and other road users. Commercial vehicle drivers are explicitly banned from holding or using a handheld mobile device for any reason while operating their vehicles; this includes making phone calls, texting, browsing the internet, or using mobile applications.

Conclusion

Distracted driving is a dangerous behavior that needs to be addressed through education, advocacy, and legislation. By focusing on increasing awareness and education, we can all play a part in reducing the number of fatalities caused by distracted driving. It is crucial for all drivers, not just commercial ones, to understand and abide by these laws to contribute to road safety. By recognizing the dangers of distracted driving, adhering to regulations, and adopting responsible driving practices, we can work towards reducing accidents, saving lives, and creating safer roads for everyone.
