April Showers Bring May Flowers

April Showers Bring May Flowers

Here are some tips if you will be moving or storing household items in the rain:

  1. Your mattress. If you are moving locally, purchase from a U-Haul store, the correct size mattress bags. Do not forget the box springs as well. If you have a king size bed, get two twin box spring bags for the appropriate size. If you are moving out of state, you need to put your mattress in a mattress carton. It is more expensive, but the purpose is to keep your mattress erect so it doesn’t bend and damage the mattress.
  2. If storing items in storage units. Depending on what the items are, use plastic air tight containers. If you are storing for a long time, consider buying bricks to get the containers off the floor, in case there is a flood, or leaks in the storage unit. Plastic containers that are the same size, stack well on top of one another.
  3. If moving on a trailer and it rains. Use plastic totes if you are moving on a trailer. Make sure you use a strong tarp over the trailer to protect the goods. You can also use liners or contractor size trash bags to put the totes inside of trash bags to keep the goods dry.
  4. If you are moving yourself and using an open trailer. Consider tarps or liners on the floor of the truck as many tarps will cover all goods. Consider when arriving at your destination, if it is raining, to have floor coverings to protect the hardwood and carpets. When removing boxes from the truck, cover with tarps so the boxes do not get wet. I always recommend if you are moving yourself to get a box truck. You never know what the weather will be on move out –move in day.
  5. Wear comfortable shoes. If it is icy or snowing, wear shoes or boots with traction to prevent slipping. Sneakers are a no no.
  6. Complete Relocation Solutions team are expert packers. We also unpack at the new location, if local. We recommend plastic totes depending upon what the items are. We do not like to pack china or crystal in totes because if the tote is dropped, the plastic is hard and items can get broken.
  7. We do always recommend hiring a licensed qualified mover rather than doing the move yourself. They have the experience, the materials and the equipment, plus a workable truck with experienced workers who are trained on how to lift and move.
