Architecting the Future of Work: Announcing our partnership with WeWork
There are 75 million women in the United States labor force today - more working women than ever before - and 70 percent are returning to the workforce after having kids, putting a massive premium on women’s free time and huge pressures on their wallets.
And while the formality of the workplace has gone down, the pressure on women to appear professional and poised - and as if they have a new outfit for every day - has remained consistent. The casualization of the workplace has only made this more challenging and expensive. According to a recent Thrive Global study with Business of Fashion, 49% of women have felt self-conscious about repeating outfits at work and 62% say the statement "dress for the job you want, not the one you have" still holds up. This increases the pink tax that women already face. There’s no question, the cost of just going to work is disproportionate for women.
In Business of Fashion, Lauren Sherman writes “If the BoF-Thrive survey is any indication, consumers continue to spend real money on their professional wardrobes. Over 29 percent of respondents said they’ve spent $500 or more on work clothes over the past six months.” And astonishingly high number when you consider than 80% of the average woman’s closet is worn three times or less.
Since its creation, Rent the Runway has aimed to empower women, allow them to feel confident every single day, save them money, and perhaps most importantly - save them time. 9 years later, we’ve begun doing that with our subscription service. With our most engaged subscribers now wearing rented clothing more than 120 days a year, we’re giving her back her most precious asset -- her time.
Continuing our mission to save women time and make their lives easier, we’re announcing today the launch of a strategic partnership with WeWork - a company that shares our vision of reimagining the future of how people live, work, and get dressed. We are teaming up to better meet the needs of the modern working woman.
Continuing our mission to save women time and make their lives easier, we’re announcing today the launch of a strategic partnership with WeWork - a company that shares our vision of reimagining the future of how people live, work, and get dressed. We are teaming up to better meet the needs of the modern working woman.
The first initiative of the partnership is a network of Rent the Runway Drop-off boxes in 15 WeWork locations across six cities: New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, D.C., and Miami - with more locations and cities to come. Located in WeWork lobbies, these boxes will allow RTR and WeWork members to directly return and instantly order their next items.
Our companies are constantly searching for ways to increase members’ convenience and productivity, and amplify the services they have access to. This new network and technology will accelerate the speed and frequency at which women are able to access the unlimited closet in the cloud, and will serve as an incredible amenity for the WeWork members and community.
We are thrilled to see this partnership come to life and excited for what the future holds for the women in our communities!
