Art, Inspiration & Life Lessons From A Teenage Baker
On Wednesday I took a day off (shock, horror) and went to the BP Portrait Awards 2020 at the Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums. I’m no Rosalind Krauss but I do like absorbing and admiring the thoughts of talented people expressed for all to see - and I’d advise anyone looking for something to occupy and inspire their minds as COVID continues to chart our collective courses, to go.
One of the portraits I liked most was by the super talented Mark Draisey. It was of a remarkable young lady called Kitty Tait who created her own boutique baker whilst facing a number of personal challenges. Click on the pic below to watch an insightful video by The Times which shows just how incredible Kitty is.
On reflection this was a nice life lesson for me on how taking time out to go and do something you don’t do every day can help expand your mind and expose you to a form of inspiration you’d never find if you stayed at the coalface all the time. On this occasion work became the vehicle to allow Kitty to express herself. In turn her journey expressed through an artist's eyes inspired me to take a step back from being an individual fixated by work (I'm now down to 20 hours a day. Tops!).
Seriously. It reminded me that polarising and eulogising about one way of being isn't healthy IMO. Lazy people are as susceptible to soulless decisions as their workaholics cousins are. An open, passionate, reflective mind can go a long way towards living a more fulfilled existence.
And if you think this piece is a little bromidic then you're probably more in need of a visit to the exhibition than I was! :-)
Enjoy your weekend and please feel free to like and share.
