The Art of Leadership: Why You Shouldn't Just "Match Energy"
In the world of business and professional engagements, a common piece of advice often circles back to the idea of "matching energy."
It's a phrase that has gained traction on the internet and in personal relationships.
Many seek partners who mirror their enthusiasm and spirit.
However, in a professional setting, this advice does not hold as steadfastly. In business, encounters with rudeness, entitlement, or outright hostility are not uncommon.
These interactions can test even the most composed individuals.
But as I've learned through my experiences, true leadership is the ability to not simply react in kind. Leadership demands that we do not match negative energies but reset the tone altogether.
This principle of leadership is about control... control over our reactions, our emotions, and the atmosphere we create.
It’s about remaining unshaken regardless of the provocations or emotional turmoil others may try to induce.
It’s my job to stabilize the environment, to be the calming force in the face of storms. Why is this important?

Because the higher you climb, the larger the target on your back grows. Success invites criticism and negative attention just as much as it does accolades. The ability to maintain your composure, to sleep well at night despite the chaos, becomes invaluable.
A single snarky message has the potential to derail your day...if you let it.
Instead of giving power to those who wish to disturb your peace, I respond with compassion. Sometimes, it’s not about empathy, where you see yourself in the other person's shoes...sometimes it’s not possible.
But compassion allows us to recognize their struggles, their exhaustion, without falling into a pit of sympathy. Being professional, then, is less about the external and more about internal mastery.
It’s about managing our emotions, responding with reason rather than impulse, and ensuring we do not become puppets to someone else's whims.
Embrace this approach, and you'll find that not only will your professional relationships improve, but you'll also empower yourself to lead more effectively, making every interaction a testament to your leadership and vision.
