Art and Mindfulness

Art, in any form, whether you are the one experiencing it or making it, makes you happy and elevates your mood. Art is as old as humans and dates back to the prehistoric times when the early man would carve or paint figures and patterns on the walls of their caves. The reason  they did was because it was cathartic and may be they did not know at that time, but it surely helped them to release their stress of protecting themselves from the wild beasts and  hunting for food.

In recent times, Harvard had published a report that said that painting and drawing  simulate parts of the brain that sparked memories in Alzheimer's patients. Various other studies and reviews too have proved how art helps de- stress, alleviates depression and pain, helps  cancer and housebound patients, increases immunity, helps children with learning and  cognitive disability, regulates BP, cholesterol levels and many other such benefits.

Since, by now we know that art helps us reduce stress by lowering our cortisol level and  increasing our endorphins (the happy hormones), this is also results in countries or cultures  that encourage the persuasion and enjoyment of art having a higher quotient than those that do not. In another study, a positive relationship between arts and culture and the subjective well-being was found through activities like art therapy, community intervention using the  medium of Art and as part of the educational curriculum. You must have seen the rise in  Adult Colouring Books which are filled with repetitive patterns and mandalas or something abstract. The very act of filling colours in those intricate patterns result in providing you  with a sense of calm and relaxation, and this is in turn, eventually increases your  productivity. Not too bad for a colouring book, right?

De-stressing via any form of art is gaining more importance in these current times with a  global pandemic that has us in its grips with its uncertainty and loss of safety. A lot of us are struggling with anxiety, panic, depression and loneliness. This is where artists and  illustrators from all over the world are lending their support through their art through social media to let us know that we are not alone in this. Through their inspiring and sometimes  radical posts, they are spreading the message of positivity and hopefulness in the world, and that there is no shame in seeking help. Nature and art have the same effect on our well-being and mental state. They both make you happy and no matter how much you think you  know them like the back of your hand, that very familiar object would still have the capacity to pleasantly surprise you with something new that had escaped your eyes. That is why it is imperative to be in constant touch with nature and art. When you expose yourself to both  daily, you get inspired, your memory gets stronger, you become more empathetic, and most importantly, you get the courage to express thoughts, ideas, emotions and feelings that  would not have ordinarily shared.

From our experiences and from our clients and collectors as well, we have had discussions  of the constant presence of art in our lives and how they have changed us for the better. You start forming a bond with the artworks present in your surroundings. The more you start  collecting art the more you gather knowledge about them. These experiences are not  necessarily deliberate or conscious even. You will notice that your views and perspectives  broaden and your mind opens up to possibilities and ideas you never thought you had in the  first place. The presence of art improves our quality of lives. A bare room does not invoke  any cheer or positivity, just like a barren land. A room full of art gives you the same amount of happiness subconsciously just as much as spending time communing with nature. With constant exposure to art in your home, you might not even realise, but your state of mind and the ambience of your home improves with the passage of time. Art adds character to your home and makes it a warm, engaging and unique environment for you to thrive and grow.
