The Art of Reinventing Yourself

Reinvention for the Win! The Fine Art of Reinventing Yourself

No one ever promised us a rose garden, so we must not be surprised or disappointed when things do not turn out the way we were hoping. Sometimes, life has a way of knocking us down hard. Loss, tragedies, setbacks, and emotional trauma can derail and devastate us. The fine art of reinventing yourself is an important skill to master.

Sometimes, we lack the resilience to pick ourselves up and move on, so we continue struggling within a cycle of aimlessness, confusion, and unhappiness. This may be brought about by sudden changes in our lives, including a new job, moving to a new location, beginning or ending a relationship, death or serious illness of a close friend or family member, or something else altogether.

Reminding yourself that change is normal is an important first step in the art of reinventing yourself, I believe. Although life can derail you, you can’t ever allow it to destroy your hopes and chances for happiness and success. And this can serve as the catalyst in choosing to begin reinventing yourself and starting anew. It’s one of the most powerful — and surprisingly simple — decisions you can make. But the outcome brings a fresh start, a new and vastly improved you, and untapped opportunities for success and greatness.

When you feel you’ve got nowhere to turn, you turn to yourself to find all the answers you need. Reinventing yourself happens from the inside out and reshapes you — and your external world for the better. Yes, you’re that powerful, as you’re discovering simply by reading this article and thinking through the steps of how you will get moving in the right direction… for you!

Finding Happiness in the Art of Reinventing Yourself

Happiness means different things for each of us. Love, career success, wealth, or friendship; we strive to find our happiness in different things. Once I had learned to purposely look for and find happiness in even the smallest things, my life began to change in amazing ways. But sometimes, these feelings can seem fleeting or completely unattainable. This is because there can be roadblocks standing between you and your personal happiness.

In that case, you need to keep reading. Some of these roadblocks include:

  • Going through a midlife crisis… at any age!
  • Feeling stuck in one place, physically or psychologically and thinking that life has no meaning.
  • Experiencing setbacks or emotional trauma that makes you think your life is over.
  • Struggling with your goals and beginning to wonder if they’re still the right ones for you.
  • Experiencing the feeling of being stressed and hemmed in by fears, worries and anxieties, and now you have stopped finding life enjoyable.
  • Realizing that you’re in the wrong place in your career or relationship and know that you need to make a big change but you don’t know where to start.

Are you currently in one or several of the above situations in your life? Don’t worry. It’s not a life sentence although you may feel destined to be unhappy and unfulfilled forever. If you make the commitment to seek real happiness, you’ll bounce back more quickly than you thought possible. Not only that but you’ll bounce back with a transformed outlook on life and a whole new you!

As a classroom teacher for twenty years, I regularly worked with students and their families to help them move out of a situation that was not serving them well. Typically, they were dealing with an abusive family member, an addiction, or something else that was disrupting the flow of their daily life. Change wasn’t easy, but once I could move them across the threshold of despair and into a more hopeful way of thinking, the shift in them was palpable. Just knowing that someone outside of their situation cared enough about them to help them begin this change was enough to empower them to take the next logical step to improve their life situation.

No matter where you are right now, and regardless of how you’re feeling, know that you hold the power to change your life and move in a direction that will be joyous, empowering, and prosperous. Stay focused and positive, considering journaling and beginning — or continuing — a meditation practice, and get some fresh air to start the wheels turning. This occurs first in our mind and then spills over to the physical aspects of our life experience.
