The art of scaling customer insights across borders

The art of scaling customer insights across borders

Customer feedback is the lifeblood of product innovation, but gathering and leveraging insights on a global scale presents unique challenges. How can companies effectively tune into the diverse voices of users across continents, cultures, and contexts? A recent "The Alignment" webinar tackled this question head-on, bringing together industry leaders like:

These experts shared their tested strategies for scaling customer feedback loops across international markets, offering a blueprint for companies aiming to build products with true global appeal. Their collective insights provide a roadmap for transforming diverse customer perspectives into powerful product improvements that resonate worldwide.

The Global Research Strategy: Casting a Wider Net Key Insight #1 -  Diversify your research pool to uncover insights that resonate with global audiences.

Harsh Srivastava, Principal Product Manager at Microsoft emphasized the power of inclusive research practices: "When you're doing your research, make sure your research screener has the right level of filters to identify different sets of people you can talk to." By engaging a diverse group of customers—across roles, geographies, abilities, and languages — Microsoft ensures their products resonate on a global scale. Their clever use of employee resource groups to fine-tune localization adds an extra layer of cultural nuance to their products.

Diversity as Your Secret Weapon: Building a World in Your Office Insight # 2 -  A team that reflects the diversity of your customer base can bridge the gap between local insights and global product development.

Asya Kuznetsova, Senior Product Manager at Wise shared a powerful strategy: "We hire very internationally... So every time my team is working on something, we are already able to understand the market needs." This approach transforms your team into a microcosm of your global market, with each member bringing unique cultural context to the table. It's like having a built-in focus group that understands the subtle nuances of different markets.

The Art of Feedback Triage: Separating Signal from Noise Insight #3: Effective prioritization helps in cutting through the noise, allowing you to focus on feedback that will truly enhance your product's performance.

With feedback pouring in from all corners of the globe, prioritization becomes key. Shahzad Shaikh, Head of Product Management at Asana advised, "You will get a ton of feedback. I don't think that should ever stop nor should you ever be afraid of that. But it really is about what leverage are you looking for?" The challenge isn't collecting feedback—it's discerning which insights will create the most impactful improvements.

Beyond Borders: The Power of Local Personas Insight#4: Tailor your approach to different markets by understanding their unique "local personas

Ronald Cummings-John, Co-founder of Global App Testing introduced the concept of "local personas," stating, "Each location that your application is used in has a viewpoint of how that product should be used." This nuanced approach recognizes that user needs and behaviors can vary significantly across markets—what works in one region may need adjustment for another.

Taming the Feedback Beast: Centralize, Automate, Conquer Insight #5: Invest in robust feedback management tools to streamline the process and ensure no valuable insight is missed.

Finally, Malte Scholz, Co-founder, CEO & CPO at Airfocus stressed the importance of centralizing feedback: "First and foremost, it really starts by making sure to centralize feedback in one central place, in one single platform." He also advised leveraging technology to streamline the process: "Make sure to not spend too much time with the product team categorizing stuff manually that a machine can do better." This approach allows for efficient processing of global feedback at scale.

The key takeaway? Scaling global customer feedback isn't about collecting more data—it's about orchestrating the right processes, teams, and mindsets to truly understand and act on that data. As Harsh Srivastava from Microsoft aptly put it, "It's very easy to kind of overlook globalization, localization, when you're trying to build a new app. But that's how you truly become a globally successful product."

As we navigate an increasingly global marketplace, these insights from industry leaders provide a valuable roadmap for companies looking to create truly global products. The challenge is significant, but so are the rewards—products that resonate with users across cultures, languages, and markets.
