Article Summary: Water Purification Technology

Farhah Rusyda Fathi

The article ‘Latest Water Purification Technology-top five’ by Water Technology listed five top water purification technologies. The technologies in this article are very informative and useful as references for other countries that use conventional water purification techniques. In this article summary, we will go through each new technology.

New water purification technologies listed are:

1. Nanotechnology

In the water treatment process, the major applications of nanotechnology are silver, copper and zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticles, nanostructured photocatalysts, nano-membranes, and nano adsorbents. Nanoparticles are small so the surface-for-volume is big. This increases the adsorption of chemical and biological particles. Therefore, separation can occur even at very low concentrations.

2. Acoustic nanotube technology

Usually, pressure is used to drive water through small carbon nanotubes. However, acoustic nanotubes use acoustically driven molecular screens, integrated with nanotubes. This device is high in efficiency but regulates less power. It is also available for many applications including municipal water plants, medical facilities, laboratories, distilleries, desalination plants, and industrial facilities.

3. Photocatalytic

Photocatalysis uses light (titanium oxide, TiO2) to purify water. Panasonic developed a technology where TiO2 binds with adsorbent and catalyst called zeolite, ensuring effective separation and recovery of photocatalysts from the water. TiO2 can remove toxic substances and break down a wide range of organic materials.

4. Aquaporin Inside™ technology

Aquaporin with carbon nanotubes allows water to pass quickly and selectively across the cell membrane. The cell regularises its volume and osmotic pressure according to suitable pressure. The membranes are available for both forward osmosis (FO) and reverse osmosis (RO) applications.

5. Automatic Variable Filtration (AVF) technology

AVF works by providing a downward flow of filter media to clean the upward flow of influent. The AVF approach uses a configurable array of continually cleaned descending bed filters. The system's two-stage architecture includes two sets of media filters that can operate in both serial or parallel mode.

What if these new technologies are implemented in Malaysia?

It will be a huge advantage to the water treatment and wastewater treatment industry in Malaysia because these technologies require less power to operate, which can also reduce greenhouse gases. Besides, water purification efficiency increases but with less cost.

In conclusion, water purification's latest technology brings a lot of advantages for the water industry.
