The Artist’s Way of Nourishing the New Mother

The first forty days of the period is the most vulnerable and is a period unlike any other in a mother's life.

A short season of life that follows the delivery of the child- an almost six-week long duration that comes after many weeks of pregnancy. It is the time to recover from birth and devote yourself to nurturing the relationship outside the womb now.

Your body is on a transformational journey, as your stamina and energy will get tested as never before. After undergoing the labor, it is essential for the whole family - and the society at large that a new mother be given the first forty days to heal and rest.

The people in her community would feed her, nurture her, and take off all her responsibilities so that she could focus on only one thing; a healthy transition from pregnancy to motherhood, joyous breastfeeding, and slow and healing postpartum.

A new mother for the first month or 40 days stays secluded from the busy life and is with her infant by her side. She should be served warm, special meals to rebuild energy, replenish the lost nutrients, and help her body produce milk. She shall follow traditional practices of keeping rested and warm to prevent exhaustion and depletion.

The soul of the postpartum is to Eat Well. It easily gets sacrificed when time, energy, and resources are lacking. Every new mother requires energy in the form of food.

And let me tell you, your first forty days are not the time to worry about losing so-called baby weight. Feed yourself wisely and well till you are nursing. Rember, good nutrient-rich, healthy fats fuel your metabolism to work efficiently stabilize your mood, and enhance your milk production.
