ASIS International Asia Pacific Conference 2024: The Future of Security in APAC

The ASIS International Asia Pacific Conference 2024 was a landmark event that brought together security professionals, thought leaders, and innovators from around the globe. Hosted over two days 4th and 5th November 2024, at the Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel in Singapore, the conference provided a platform for addressing the most pressing challenges facing the security industry today while fostering meaningful discussions about its future.

The event was graced by executives from ASIS International which included Cy Oatridge, CPP (President, ASIS International), Bill Tenney (CEO, ASIS International), Carla Lochiatto, IOM, CAE (Director, CEO Centre for Leadership & Development) & Martin Gill (Chair, ASIS Foundation).

Insightful Discussions on Security and Technology

The conference featured a series of engaging sessions where experts tackled critical issues such as the impact of shifting geopolitical dynamics on security strategies. These discussions underscored the urgency of adopting adaptive measures and resilience in an increasingly unpredictable world. Speakers emphasized the importance of proactive risk management and forward-thinking strategies, ensuring preparedness not just for today’s challenges but for those on the horizon.

Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced connected devices, were central to many conversations. Industry leaders explored how these innovations are revolutionizing the security sector. AI-driven tools are now enabling faster threat detection and response, while IoT advancements enhance data flow and situational awareness, resulting in quicker and more precise action. Together, these technologies are not just optional enhancements but indispensable elements for safeguarding critical infrastructure and building resilience in the industry.

Another pivotal topic was the management of insider threats. Speakers highlighted the need for a balanced approach that combines robust technological solutions with proactive organizational culture. They shared strategies for early risk identification, fostering open communication, and cultivating trust within teams to create robust internal safeguards and ensure organizational resilience.

The Outstanding Security Performance Awards – Southeast Asia

The event hosted the prestigious OSPAs awards on the first day. The Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPAs) recognize and reward companies, people and innovation across the security sector. The OSPAs are designed to be both independent and inclusive, providing an opportunity for outstanding performers, whether buyers or suppliers, to be recognized and their success to be celebrated. Networking and Field Visits

The conference was not just about learning—it was also about connection. A highlight of Day 1 was a vibrant networking event at SKAI Bar in the Swissotel. With breathtaking views of the Singapore skyline, the event provided a relaxed setting for attendees to network, share ideas, and build relationships over food and drinks. The atmosphere was filled with lively conversations, laughter, and camaraderie, encapsulating the spirit of the security community.

On Day 2, the conference concluded with enriching field visits to key locations showcasing cutting-edge security operations:

  • Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP): Attendees explored the Robotics Lab to gain insights into the latest advancements in robotics and their applications in security.
  • National University of Singapore (NUS): The Integrated Operations Centre demonstrated advanced systems that support operational security, offering a glimpse into how technology is driving efficiency and safety.
  • SMRT: Participants received an in-depth presentation on SMRT’s security systems, including a live demonstration of screening operations, highlighting the intricacies of public transport security.
  • Police Heritage Centre: Visitors engaged with multimedia exhibits and displays chronicling the history of the Singapore Police Force. From early policing and secret societies to post-WWII challenges and modern community policing, the center highlighted Singapore’s journey toward becoming one of the world’s safest nations. A poignant tribute honored the bravery and sacrifices of officers who have served in the line of duty.

ASIS APAC Board

The event also witnessed another milestone of APAC board inaugural announcement.

On Day 2, Danny Chan (Chair, APAC Board) announced the inaugural of 2025 Asia Pacific Regional Board. The new board will focus on strengthening regional collaboration, advancing professional development opportunities, and addressing emerging security challenges across the Asia Pacific region.

The success of the conference would not have been possible without the dedication of the organizing committee. From coordinating speakers to managing logistics, their meticulous planning ensured the event ran seamlessly. The field visits and networking opportunities reflected their commitment to creating an engaging and comprehensive experience for all attendees. Their contributions spanned months of preparation, from coordinating schedules to ensuring smooth day-to-day operations, reflecting their commitment to excellence and the success of the event.

For the student volunteers, who are part of the ASIS Singapore Chapter, the conference offered an invaluable opportunity to step outside the classroom and immerse themselves in the real-world dynamics of the security sector.
