#AtlantaFX, Those That Get It... Get It.

Hey y'all. It’s been a while since we've talked (lol, is this a phone call or article?). I feel like my subscribers are people I'm calling at this point. Thanks for tuning (reading) in.

I’ve been feeling a bit uninspired lately, not gonna lie. But something that always helps me with feeling not so inspired is TV. Especially TV in art form. Shows with layers.

If you haven’t seen Atlanta on FX, you’re surely missing out. I’ve always been a fan of the show, and for their third season, I got to attend the series premiere and panel discussion with Donald Glover (creator AKA Childish Gambino), Stephen Glover (Donald’s older brother and writer), Hiro Murai (director), and more.

For those that don’t know about Atlanta, it’s a comedy-drama that aired in 2016 and is now on its third season on Hulu. Some episodes are anecdotal, while others connect back to the main character of “Earn” (played by Donald Glover), managing his cousin, “Paperboy,” an up and coming rapper in the city of Atlanta. The show covers comedic and hard hitting topics around Black culture, and many times pokes fun at the reality of being a person of color, particularly a Black person in America.

I loveeee seeing this show thrive and push boundaries! Stories written by us, for us. And incase you're wondering, Donald Glover isn't afraid of a little critique.

The show brings memes and current event news to screen through a comedic (or shocking for some) lens, and when asked during the panel how they’re able to achieve this kind of writing in the writers room, Glover responded "we have a group chat and just send stuff we see to each other.'" Talk about fun, and effortless brainstorming.

Those ideas are then brought into the writers room, and they sometimes even “lovingly debate” on their opinion about them or how an episode should play out.

Atlanta is an incredibly written show. Nothing feels forced, and I feel like I know the cast personally. They allude to jokes that only we could understand. Some episodes might even make people uncomfortable, but that's the point?

Another thing that I really love about the show is their ability to story tell through branding. I don’t know who’s in charge of this over at Hulu -- if it’s a copywriter, or Donald Glover himself - but it’s genius. The copy descriptions for the show read like its Donald Glover himself, telling us the summary of each episode. As a copywriter, I LOVE THIS. It doesn’t get much more authentic than this.

Idk why I decided to make today’s article about a random #AtlantaFX plug, but I’m here for it and I hope you are too. Just wanted to share something thats been inspiring me lately.
