Is The ATS Friendly Resume You Purchased Really ATS Compliant?

Is The ATS Friendly Resume You Purchased Really ATS Compliant?

Just about every resume writer claims their resumes are Applicant Tracking System compliant. This means they're claiming that the resume will be natively read into a resume screening database and nothing about the resume's format will cause an ATSs to block it.

The problem is that these claims are rarely true, because most resume writers, including the big resume writing companies, job board resume services, outplacement, Certified Resume Writers, and even most small resume writers produce resumes with formats that get bounced by or misread into ATSs.

Here's why - Most resume writers market "fancy resumes", to visually differentiate themselves from other resume firms, because job seekers can easily see unique graphic design. But that "fanciness" is what can cause many ATSs to reject/misread your resume ... even when you're qualified and guess 100% of the keywords.

Here are a few (of the many) reasons the resume you paid for isn't ATS compliant:

  • Images And Graphics: Can cause all sorts of formatting errors when run through an ATS, including blocking important information (like your name, phone number, or email). Some ATSs can turn this into meaningless random letters.
  • Background Colors, Highlighting, Or Grayscale: Even when it's just section headings, this type of formatting can cause unpredictable results, including blocking the information in bullet points.
  • Tables And Text Boxes: Can cause ATSs to ignore what's inside the table or text box, and can block other information nearby on your resume.
  • File Format: The resume file formats most resume writers use aren't natively readable by most ATSs. When a resume file format isn't readable, it has to be translated causing delays of up to 2 weeks for your resume to be searchable, plus the translation can cause typos or formatting mistakes throughout the resume.

These are just a few of the common ways professional resume writers create documents are are ATS un-friendly and non-compliant. There are dozens of other ways, and any of them can cause an ATS to block or misread your otherwise perfect resume.

This doesn't mean you'll never get through an ATS, but it does mean that some ATSs will block your resume due to the format and the employer's ATS (and version of that ATS). Depending on the specific formatting used, it could mean that most ATSs will reject you.
