The WHY is just as important as the WHO
Who you hire as your management team is one of the most important decisions you make in business. However, I challenge you to ask a critical question of that individual and that is - WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO INTO MANAGEMENT?
The biggest mistake I see, especially in sales, is when a top performer is elevated to a leadership role. Everyone has good intentions to replicate their success on a wider frequency. However, what is that top performer really like? Do they care about anyone besides themselves?
I’ve managed many top performers in my career and most of them are so incredibly good because they are self possessed and determined to crush their number. But I’ve found that those individuals don’t necessarily care about the success of others and worse, they cannot understand why their team will not perform just like they have. Additionally, these managers can manage up very well, covering their tracks so senior management is often unaware of the sentiment in the field.
So when you have that open req, be sure you are asking, why do they want to be in leadership? And really listen to the answers. You should be looking for people who enjoy seeing the success of others. They should be excited about developing their team, cultivating talent and collectively winning.
If you neglect to ask the question, your people and your culture will suffer. Don’t be that leader. Your people deserve better.
The Magic is in the Mess
Whenever I’m coaching someone on how to tell their story, I always urge them to talk about the worst thing that ever happened to them. Now you are probably thinking, that’s nuts- what kind of coach would do that?
There’s a reason- I don’t want them to dwell on the car crash. I want them to mention it and talk about what they learned coming out of whatever horrible thing happened to them. What people will remember is how they triumphed over hardship. They will recognize the lessons learned. And this will always serve them well and make them memorable.
We teach this in depth in the SELL ME YOUR STORY WORKSHOP featured later in this newsletter.

“You will be a javelin thrower,” the coach for the Lithuanian national team told her. She had no idea what that meant. But within two years, Inga Stasiulionyte was competing with the best. After reaching the finals in the European Championship, she was offered a scholarship to attend USC. Years of experience in being a competitive Olympic athlete, working as a business analyst, building startups, and heading the first MIT Sports Entrepreneurship Bootcamp provided Inga with a great understanding of the challenges and needs of striving for self-realization on and off the field. Today, Inga's clients include Oracle, Salesforce, Facebook, HubSpot, finance and medical professionals, and Olympians. She prepared athletes to become European Champions, Olympians, National Record Holders, and founders at the top of their game. Inga leads a startup Ofounders.com, specializing in performance coaching that helps leaders achieve superior results using Olympic-standard mindset development techniques. She is also part of the Master Performance Coaches team at valorperform.com and the Lithuanian Athletics Federation.
Rebecca (Becca) Kinney, worked in healthcare for 16 years and is a self-proclaimed recovering workaholic. Today she is a writer and an entrepreneur and owns a small business called Cypress, Inc. that helps medical companies tell their stories on LinkedIn. In 2018 Becca suffered the unexpected loss of both her parents and the grief is something she wanted to turn into inspiration for others. Leaving corporate medical sales in 2021 was a tough call but Becca has a mission to help professionals truly learn to navigate self discovery. In January 2023 she started a newsletter called Unraveled that discusses how as professionals, we can begin to unwind and start to express ourselves in a way that is relatable and maybe even a bit unpolished to succeed in ways we never thought possible before. Together she believes we can unravel and become even more successful than ever before.

I LOVE Summer. It’s my favorite season. But I am mosquito bait. I am the person you want to invite to all of your Summer BBQs because they will find me and leave you alone.
So whenever there’s a good natural remedy I’m pretty down for trying it. So here’s a couple that I’m going to pass along.
Luck of the Irish Remedy
Ingredients:
1 Cheese Grater
A bar(s) of Irish Spring soap depending on how big of an area you want to cover
Grate the bars of soap into a large bowl or onto a tray. It should look like bright green shredded cheese. Once you are done grating, take the bowl and sprinkle it on the ground to make a perimeter around the area you want to cover. It should last you a while, some say weeks- they hate the smell.
DIY Mosquito Catcher
Ingredients:
1 plastic bottle
Warm water
Sugar
Yeast
Cut the top of the water bottle a couple inches from the cap but keep the top of the bottle. You don’t need the cap but you will be inverting the top so it rests in the bottom part of the bottle.
Add warm water, sugar and yeast. Set the top half of the bottle so it rests inside with the mouth of the bottle pointed down. This mixture will create carbon dioxide which will release from the mixture within 2 hours. It will lure the mosquitoes into the bottle. They will take a drink and then fly away and ideally explode into an untimely death never biting another person or animal again.
Coffee- People LOVE! Mosquitoes HATE!
Keep your leftover coffee grounds and sprinkle them in your planters or your garden. We love the smell but mosquitoes hate it and will stay away!
Enjoy the season because Fall will be here before we know it!
Happy Summer!!
