AustCham Korea Attends K-FEZ PR Day 2024
Senior Advisor Jacco Zwetsloot attended the K-FEZ PR Day 2024 on behalf of the AustCham Secretariat. This event, opened by the Vice Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, showcased the nine free economic zones (FEZ) in South Korea, and how they can help international businesses to succeed globally with their excellent infrastructure, highly skilled workforce, and other special benefits. Also attending were people from various embassies, chambers of commerce, and Korean and international companies.
Featuring three brief but comprehensive presentations by Invest Korea and representatives from the Semiconductor and Bio-health industries, the event was fast-paced and provided much inspiration for firms seeking to invest in business-friendly hubs.
In thinking about the best way to assist businesses to find the most suitable FEZ for them, Jacco suggested to KOTRA and MOTIE staff that a large-language model AI chatbot, especially trained using data on all nine of the K-FEZ, would be a good way to consolidate information. A CEO could engage with the chatbot, providing information on their company, and the chatbot could suggest the appropriate FEZ, and offer a chance to request a consultation.

Australia and South Korea Strengthen LNG Ties Amid Energy Transition: Korean Trade Minister
In an interview with Australia-based Energy News Bulletin, South Korea’s Minister for Trade, Dr Inkyo Cheong, emphasised the enduring trade relations between Australia and South Korea, particularly in the energy sector. As South Korea shifts from coal and oil to LNG to meet its carbon neutrality goals, Cheong highlighted Australia’s pivotal role as a reliable LNG supplier. Australia, which is already South Korea's leading LNG source, continues to attract significant investment despite concerns over regulatory changes like the Safeguard Mechanism.
Cheong stressed the importance of balancing Australia's carbon neutrality policies with fostering a favourable investment climate for South Korean companies, including KOGAS. Thanks to KAFTA, Australian Beef is now more attractive to Koreans
Before the 2014 Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA), Australian beef imports to South Korea were slapped with a 40 percent tariff. Under KAFTA, this trade barrier has been gradually lowered, making Australian beef an attractive option to Korean diners.
Australia also rears Wagyu beef cattle, and north Queensland beef producer King River has exported A$1.5mn of its Australian Wagyu beef to Korea over the last year, making it one of that farm’s top export markets. King River has been able to do this thanks to active support from Austrade and Trade & Investment Queensland.
