Australia's Treaty?
I'm not a First Nations person; following my mother's death, at nine, I was placed in an institution, where the most vulnerable persons were First Nations people.
In our classroom, we were seated by "intelligence". The last seat in the classroom was occupied by Bonie (a First Nations person) who was subject to unfathomable cruelty. Few can forget a 10 year old begging and crying, publicly, for mercy. Which did not come.
So in Naidoc Week, I contemplate the path for First Nations people; I am clearly not an expert and cannot "speak for" First Nation's people.
I was struck, during a visit to New Zealand, the Treaty created between Europeans and Maoris; it has led, not perfectly, to substantial mutual respect.
I Australia, First Nations peoples are bound to their Land; yet welcome visitors, it seems without limitation, to their Land. Hard to find any example in the world where communities welcome others, without restriction.
The Voice failed; it's not within my ability to observe positives and natives to The Voice.
In this Naidoc Week, I do query, what is the potential value of Treaties? Government programs to support First Nations peoples have value, but as a society, how do we arrive at a respectful, embracing, comprehensive solution?
I will really thank feedback?
