Authentic Leaders are caring leaders

Authentic leaders are genuine, driven, passionate, principled, professional, people-centric, consistent & caring. They have a sense of purpose and vision of the future - knowing their mission and having a passion for it.  Authentic leaders have a service mindset and a robust set of values - knowing what they are and being unwilling to compromise them for anything or anyone. Authentic caring leadership counts more now than any time before. Current and future business success needs caring leadership to elicit opinions, perspectives, and mindsets. In doing so, influencing, modifying, and changing behaviors - especially when reinforced, it’s likely to be sustainable. Influencing change encourages staff, colleagues, cohorts, and mentees to do their best, acknowledging their contributions and then rewarding their efforts, improvements, and accomplishments.

Authentic #leaders encourage consideration of others, nudging mindsets to influence behavior in positive ways. Caring helps businesses gain and retain competitive advantage and keeping things running smoothly while simultaneously keeping an eye on future needs. When caring leadership is absent or insincere, the workforce finds work can be a grind (something to be endured to pay the bills.)

Authentic leaders have a sense of compassion and are sensitive to the needs of others, being genuinely concerned about the individuals’ well-being. Their character is built & reinforced by open & honest relationships that help convey a sense of connectedness in being willing to share experiences, listen to others’ experiences, and be communicative with their teams & followers. Lastly, they are self-aware – having self-discipline, consistency, focus, and adaptability.

Overall, these leadership qualities (and more than those listed here) make up an authentic leader. Fundamentally - vision, passion, behaviors, ability to connect, consistency, and compassion are qualities that inspire. Authentic leaders convey trustworthiness, caring, understanding of the work; and, how to keep the team happy, productive, focused, and confident the leader has their (and not just their own) interests in mind.

Authentic Leaders are in a perfect position to nudge the organization’s culture to greater resilience (adaptability and accommodation) by focusing on what makes workers enthusiastic about their jobs. They want to make the organization attractive to top talent and create the workplace where our teams want to stay because work is exciting and challenging and contributes to something bigger than themselves. An #authentic & #caring leader bolsters trust, influencing a team’s and individual’s states of mind and tapping into their drive, energy, commitment, and engagement. Nudging others to care begins with compassion and includes providing the autonomy for all teams to deliver what they’ve hoped and now realize they’re capable of accomplishing.

Authentic leaders do not take credit only when things go right and not be willing to accept responsibility when things go wrong - they're all-in, all the time!

Caring is about a sense of belonging, safety, and reward. When people feel welcome and safe, they’re more trusting of the relationships, more confident to voice opinions and share ideas. Positive interpersonal relationships build #teams based on trust. Caring is also about empathy and encouragement, building resilience that enables teams to handle adversity more effectively - restoring trust, loyalty, and commitment to the cause - inviting dialogue, promoting diversity, fostering inclusion, empowering growth, and elevating contribution.

Who cares? In reality, we all do - which is why I believe the caring leader can nudge individuals & teams to develop a cohesive, results-oriented mindset to produces extraordinary outcomes! These leaders encourage individuals & groups to build a coherent, results-oriented mindset to produce remarkable results!

Being an authentic leader means you lead by example - demonstrating not only through words but, more importantly, actions. These examples substantiate the same values and behaviors you expect from the team. Authenticity starts with you 'walking the talk' and demonstrating the behavior you hope to see in your team and employees, as well.

Hey Don, I with you on all these qualities. Aspirationally, I'm all for it. But in thinking about real people what are some of the sub qualities of Authentic Leadership that you would encourage leaders to focus on first?
