Last week I was a guest of André D. as part of his Global Conversations.
This was a long time coming and you might like this because normally I'm the one asking the questions!
If you want to learn more about:
- My background (stuff I don't typically share)
- Why Evidence Based Inclusion is not for everyone.
- Some key tips for organisational leaders.
I even suggest when Unconscious Bias Training may be useful!
Here's the video too!
Last week we hosted the Authority Series.
Our guest was author Dr. Nika White, CDE®, IOM who spoke about her book Inclusion Uncomplicated.
When I spoke to Dr Nika, I asked 5 key questions:
1) What Does This Book Have To Offer That We Can't Get Anywhere Else?
Dr Nika said "the number one thing is going to be practicality. It really is about simplifying DEI"
The book reads:
- Very simple
- Very clear
- Very direct.
For me this was indicative of Dr Nika's marketing background.
It came across as the work of a skilled copywriter.
2) What High Impact Activity Can We Apply in Our Everyday Lives?
Dr Nika suggested we should engage in critical reflections to " interrogate our own thoughts".
Specifically.
We should "start really thinking about what is your DEI story?"
3) What Did You Put In The Book That You Wish More People Understood?
Dr Nika said that this reminded her of a question that she had heard before.
Recommended by LinkedIn
"What have you been saying that you feel like no one's hearing?"
Her answer:
"I really want the audience to reflect on their ability to understand conditions both within the dominant and the non dominant culture"
"I really want people to unravel the yarn, to unravel the knot of this DEI complexity."
"I want us to just remember that we all are intertwined."
4) Was There Anything You Wrote For The Book But Decided To Leave Out?
Dr Nika said she was given full liberty to create a book that she could feel proud of.
However:
"there were a lot of stories that I had to pick and choose from"
But
"we can't just have the whole book to be a whole bunch of stories."
I'm so glad she said that!
5) How Did Writing The Book Change The Way You Think About These Issues?
Dr Nika said: "I wrote the book to help transform and maybe change others. It changed me tremendously."
"It forced me to become even more diligent about who my audience is for this book."
This was really useful because it also helped Dr Nika to be aware of who the book was NOT for.
Someone "that has already dug their heels into the sand"
Someone "pretty firm in their belief that the world has no place for diversity, equity and inclusion and belonging."
Dr Nika said "That's not my audience."
Writing the book also provided an opportunity to learn more about her voice.
"to lean more into my voice and the value of it."
Dr Nika made a generous offer to give you a free pdf of her 2024 Trends Report.
