Aviation's Next Big Evolution: The Successful Integration of eVTOLs

We've made our way into 2024, a promising new year for the entire Urban Air Mobility (UAM) industry, with Volocopter closer to receiving type certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and launching the first air taxi service in Europe. Volocopter's advancements in bringing UAM to life demonstrate the potential for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to transform how people and goods move around urban environments. Most importantly, these advancements highlight how aviation is evolving technologically right in front of our eyes. But what does it take for this “evolution” to prove successful?    

Pushing Toward a Unified Global Ecosystem   

Introducing eVTOLs is a huge responsibility that involves ensuring the safety of both pilots and passengers and seamlessly introducing these vehicles into urban areas. That is why, all eVTOL players must act in unison by initiating strategic partnerships and cooperating closely with regulatory bodies and governments to create a global ecosystem. More specifically, companies need to facilitate space that promotes collaboration and discussion on topics concerning industry best practices, safety standards, infrastructure development, and more.   

The recent report on electric aviation adopted by the European Parliament perfectly highlights the need for increased support and funding in the sector, other important elements towards the successful integration of eVTOL services. Only coordinated support and investments from all sides, whether from governments, business entities, and individuals alike, will enable the transition from flight testing to actual passenger inner-city transport. However, while acting in unison and steady financial support are indeed key, public acceptance is another aspect to consider for the successful integration of eVTOLs. I will briefly explore this element in the next section.


Getting the Public on Board 

2023 has shown that eVTOL technology works and is here to stay. But, as with every novel technology, the opinions about eVTOL solutions vary. While some people doubt the benefits these solutions will bring in the future, others share excitement for what's to come. This "duality" in sentiment is understandable, as not everyone thinks the same or has the same knowledge about eVTOL solutions. As members of the UAM industry, it is our duty to increase educational efforts through a 360-degree approach that targets stakeholders, political representatives, and the wider public. 

For instance, at Volocopter, we've had the opportunity to discuss eVTOL technology and how it could play a critical role in addressing urbanization challenges with prominent government officials from Germany, France, Singapore, and other countries. In addition, we were invited by the European Commission to join the G7 Transport Minister's meeting in Japan, where we showcased our commitment to developing this new form of mobility.

Outside the political realm, we've organized public showcases and flight tests as educational campaigns to demonstrate how our air taxis are safe, quiet, and produce zero in-flight emissions. Last year, for example, we presented our VoloCity static model in Osaka – welcoming thousands of visitors – and joined the Paris Air Show, allowing people to see our aircraft fly, ask questions, and exchange knowledge with our team. Moreover, we have conducted flight tests in several U.S. cities, such as Texas, Las Vegas, Tampa, and New York, and in two Japanese cities, Osaka and Amagasaki, to mention a few. We observed first-hand how these tests positively changed the public's perception of the safety and effectiveness of eVTOL operating in urban areas – indicating the ever-increasing need for public acceptance campaigns. 

Meeting in the Middle 

The era of all-electric flying is just around the corner. Yet, to successfully integrate eVTOLs in urban spaces, companies must focus on creating a unified ecosystem and educating people about the "why" and "how" of all-electric flights. On the other side, while people have the right to be skeptical, they should also approach eVTOL technology with an open mind and give it time to demonstrate its transformative potential.

As a member of the UAM industry, Volocopter is determined to achieve its objective of flying passengers starting in Paris in 2024 and continuing to other cities globally. I am thrilled to witness Volocopter turning the vision of electric flying into a reality and even more eager to see the continuous evolution of UAM as an integral part of aviation.

I commend Volocopter for their efforts to engage the public in advocating for urban air mobility. Companies must collaborate and create a unified platform for these endeavors. Public acceptance will naturally increase as people witness the benefits and practical applications. I am excited to see Volocopter's services showcased at the Paris Olympics! Advocacy for advanced air mobility is essential for gaining acceptance from both governments and the public
