Award-winning: Fuel-saving app promotes environmentally friendly technologies
18.10.2023/ 8.6 billion mobile devices worldwide can help measure the CO2 consumption of vehicles thanks to an ISO standard. In doing so, they prove the effectiveness of innovative, more environmentally friendly technologies in traffic. For this approach, Deutsche Telekom receives the Industry Award at the ITS World Congress.
If we want to stop climate change, we have to reduce CO2 emissions. Road traffic is responsible for 5.8 gigatons (15 percent) of global CO2 emissions. However, measures to reduce it are associated with high costs. If in public transport, cities and municipalities want to switch to electric vehicles, operated partially or even fully autonomously, for example, accompanying technology must be introduced. This is profitable if it can be scientifically proven that these vehicles bring CO2 savings. How high are the savings compared to the internal combustion engine? What is the advantage if drivers are shown the remaining time of the red light phase?
This can be estimated using a simple mobile communications solution. Almost all cell phones contain chips that use satellite data to calculate their position once a second. The cell phone records speed and also gradient. An algorithm calculates the current fuel consumption from the weight, engine characteristics, energy content of the fuel, wind and rolling resistance together with the data from the position. The position data provides values for idle times, acceleration and braking. This is the principle behind the successfully deployed GreenMagenta app "Low Carbon Mobility Management." Deutsche Telekom and ERTICO - ITS Europe , the European association for the implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), have brought the ISO-23795-1 standard for low-carbon fleet management, navigation and green intelligent transport systems to approval in 2022. At this year's industry gathering for connected mobility, the ITS World Congress in Suzhou, China, ITS Asia, ITS North America and ITS Europe honor Deutsche Telekom with the Hall of Fame Industry Award 2023 - for its contribution to CO2 capture and ISO standardization.
"We believe that 8.6 billion smartphones and mobile devices offer huge potential for balancing the environment and transport needs. To make these markets as large and successful as they need to be for climate protection, there is no way around global standardization," explains Ralf Willenbrock , Product Manager for Connected Mobility at Telekom subsidiary T-Systems. The standard provides a transparent basis for calculation and comparable results, while the mobile communications platform offers simple, easy scalability. Drivers worldwide can use it and contribute to environmental protection.
