AXE THE TAX

AXE THE TAX

The new tax change has doomed you all.

The new tax change has brought trouble to the guardians of life who fight tirelessly to save patients and resolve the Canadian Healthcare Crisis.

For over two decades, I have dedicated my life to the noble cause of healing. The only two things that guided my hands were:

--- skill

--- compassion.

But now everyone and the healthcare crisis in Canada face a new foe.

This year can be quite literally declared as ‘the year of reckoning’.

The new tax changes cast their gaze on capital gains.

For the unaware,  physicians rely upon such gains for planning their retirement strategy. Because we do not have pensions.

Seeing the new changes, it would have been lovely to have them.

This blow is nothing short of devastating and will add fuel to Canada Healthcare issues.

I and many other healers find themselves in uncertainty over our future. Our hard-earned retirement savings are now hanging in the balance. The very foundation of our retirement savings has crumbled.

Many seasoned veterans are now stressed about what their future holds:

Can I retire?

How much longer do I need to continue working to ensure that my family is protected?

Even the Canadian Medical Association has warned of a mass exodus by both seasoned and freshers alike.

The changes will create resentment with the government at a time when relations are brittle at best.

Let me ask you this:

What about aspiring physicians who are still in the middle of their studies or the middle of the practice?

Is this not setting them up for moving away from the profession? Is this the result of our grueling shifts during residency?

Is this an action that appreciates our struggles and hard work?

Can we allow for exceptions to the tax changes?

I raise my voice in protest with my colleagues.

I ask that the government rolls back this tax hike before irreparable damage is done.

I ask you to share this post to the ears deaf to the cries of those who labor tirelessly to heal the sick.

Until next time, this is Rahim Valani MD, MMedEd, MBA, LLM wishing you good health, and hope to see you when things are much better.
