Ayurvedic Perspective on Psoriasis! #wellnessguruji #shreevarma #DrGowthaman

Introduction:

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, views psoriasis as a complex condition that arises from an imbalance of the body’s doshas (fundamental bio-energies) - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In Ayurveda, psoriasis is closely related to the imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas and is often referred to as "Kitibha" or "Eka Kushta." This holistic approach not only addresses the physical symptoms but also the underlying causes and mental well-being.

Dosha Imbalance:

  1. Vata Dosha: Vata, which governs movement and activities in the body, when imbalanced, can lead to dryness, roughness, and scaling of the skin, common symptoms of psoriasis.
  2. Pitta Dosha: Pitta, which governs heat and metabolism, contributes to the inflammation, redness, and itching seen in psoriasis. An imbalance in Pitta dosha often results in excessive heat in the body, leading to these symptoms.
  3. Kapha Dosha: Kapha, responsible for stability and lubrication, when imbalanced, can lead to the thickening of the skin and scales, characteristic of psoriasis.

Causes According to Ayurveda:

Ayurveda identifies several factors that may contribute to the imbalance of doshas, leading to psoriasis:

  • Improper Diet: Consumption of incompatible foods (e.g., dairy with fish), excessive intake of sour and salty foods, and junk food.
  • Stress and Anxiety: Mental stress and emotional disturbances can aggravate the condition.
  • Seasonal Changes: Exposure to cold and dry weather can exacerbate Vata dosha, while hot weather can worsen Pitta dosha.
  • Toxins (Ama): Accumulation of toxins in the body due to improper digestion.

Ayurvedic Treatment Approaches:

Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis is multifaceted, focusing on detoxification, balancing the doshas, and strengthening the body’s immune system. Key treatment modalities include:

  1. Shodhana (Detoxification): The detoxification process aims to remove toxins (ama) from the body, restoring balance to the doshas.
  2. Shamana (Pacification Therapy): Shamana therapy aims to pacify the imbalanced doshas through herbal medications and dietary changes.
  3. Panchakarma Therapy: Panchakarma is a comprehensive detoxification and rejuvenation program that includes procedures like Snehana (oleation), Swedana (sudation), and the five main procedures (Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Rakta Mokshana).
  4. External Therapies:
  5. Internal Medications:

Dietary and Lifestyle Guidelines:

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of diet and lifestyle in managing psoriasis:

  • Diet: Include bitter gourd, neem leaves, turmeric, and other bitter and astringent foods. Avoid foods that increase Pitta and Kapha, such as spicy, oily, and processed foods.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins.
  • Stress Management: Practice yoga, meditation, and pranayama to reduce stress and promote mental well-being.
  • Regular Exercise: Engage in moderate exercise to improve circulation and reduce stress.

Conclusion:

Ayurveda provides a holistic approach to managing psoriasis by addressing the root causes and imbalances in the body. Through detoxification, herbal treatments, dietary and lifestyle modifications, and stress management, Ayurveda aims to restore balance to the doshas, reduce symptoms, and improve overall health. By following these principles, individuals with psoriasis can achieve long-term relief and better quality of life.
