Azmi & Associates Welcomes Delegation from Universitas Hasanuddin’s Faculty of Law, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Azmi & Associates had the distinct privilege of hosting a delegation from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), South Sulawesi, Indonesia, at our Kuala Lumpur headquarters on 22 November 2024. The delegation, comprising 20 students along with Senators and Heads of Departments, was led by Prof. Dr. Hamzah Halim, Dean of the Faculty of Law at one of Indonesia’s leading autonomous universities.

This visit marks a significant step in promoting meaningful academic and professional collaboration across borders, providing an invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and explore potential avenues for joint initiatives in legal research, education, and professional development.

The event began with an opening speech by Zul Adenan , Chief Operating Officer of Azmi & Associates, who emphasized the importance of cross-border partnerships in shaping the future of the legal profession.

This was followed by a series of engaging presentations from our esteemed team of partners and lawyers:

Farhah Hayati Mamat, Partner, delivered an insightful presentation on the Financial Services Practice in Malaysia, addressing the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape and emerging opportunities in the financial sector.

Izzat Zamri , Partner, provided an in-depth overview of the Litigation Practice in Malaysia. He highlighted the specialized nature of litigation, noting Malaysia’s establishment of dedicated courts for sectors such as construction, admiralty, commercial disputes, and muamalat matters. Izzat emphasized the advantages of these specialized courts, which ensure greater expertise in resolving complex, industry-specific cases. He also offered a comparative analysis of litigation practices between Malaysia and Indonesia, illustrating key procedural and cultural differences while identifying areas of opportunity for growth within Indonesia’s litigation market.

Sherena Khairul Suman , Senior Associate, captivated the audience with her presentation, “My Journey as a Lawyer in Malaysia,” sharing her personal experiences, challenges, and growth throughout her legal career.

Asiah Siddiqah Abdurrahman , Managing Associate, concluded the presentations with her motivational account, “Experience as a Junior Lawyer,” offering insights into the formative years of a legal career in Malaysia and the importance of continuous professional development.

A key moment of the day was the interactive session with Dato' Azmi Mohd Ali , Senior Partner, who shared his insights on the future of the legal industry in Indonesia. Dato’ Azmi emphasized Indonesia’s dynamic legal market and the critical role of legal professionals in supporting the nation’s economic growth. He highlighted the potential for the Indonesian legal system to further specialize and innovate, fostering a robust environment for legal excellence and regional collaboration.

This event underscores Azmi & Associates’ commitment to strengthening relationships with global academic institutions and promoting collaboration across borders. By bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application, we aim to contribute to the development of a vibrant, interconnected legal community. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Universitas Hasanuddin and other institutions to foster shared growth and knowledge.

Law students from Universitas Hasanuddin Sulawesi had made 3 working visits to Azmi & Associates, including this trip. And I had been to their Law School once in 2019 to give a 1-day talk on globalization of legal service, emerging law practice areas, policy reform and law, law and investment. It’s commendable for University Hasanuddin to make a visit to our law firm, and also to one or two law schools in Malaysia, as part of the process of giving regional exposure to the law students. We hope they would be inspired with what Azmi & Associates has shared with them during these visits!
