Back to one!

Back to one!

Those of you who know me well are aware of my time in the entertainment industry on both sides of the camera. “Back to one” is a phrase used by Directors at the end of a scene requiring talent and the crew to reset then start again.

“Back to one” can also be applied to our professional lives.

In high school and college, my career interests included technical theatre and law enforcement.  In theatre; I built sets, hung lights and helped make the magic happen while working behind the scenes! Unfortunately, this is not an industry that guarantees steady employment and I was a teen who was out on his own.

With a law enforcement career, I could make a positive difference in my community while receiving a regular paycheck! “Back to one” – law enforcement it is!

My service in municipal law enforcement was rewarding but not always fulfilling. In those years, it seemed that we were more reactive and less proactive. I started considering alternative careers that focused on proactive methods of crime prevention. Approaching my 15-year mark, this was a difficult decision.

As a person of faith, I am convinced that everything happens for a reason and, after a variety of circumstances, I realized that changing careers at that time was the right thing to do – “Back to one!”

An unexpected private sector opportunity presented itself from a part-time, secondary job. Where being proactive is paramount in the design, implementation and management of successful security programs, I found all that I hoped for in my next career.

Recognizing my “back to one” moments permitted me to start again then move into a new direction. I love the path I traveled for over twenty years! I continue to grow in my profession, have earned a good reputation in the industry and have been afforded the opportunity to give back by teaching and presenting to others interested in the field.

Are you in a place where you are fulfilled by your career and truly happy? Have you ignored those “back to one” moments in your life to reset then start again, perhaps in a new direction? If it came, would you take the hint?

In summary, do not be afraid to go “back to one” and pursue that new career, start your own business or otherwise reset and start over. This just may be the right time! cb
