Balancing Work and Refereeing: Maiko Hagio
Wanting to get more into football than just watching, Maiko Hagio, a researcher in our pharmaceutical division, entered the refereeing field. After joining the company, she worked at the Kashima office in Ibaraki, Japan. Football is quite popular, and the number of the female players is also increasing all over the world now. Although the developed environment for training female referees varied among regions, Kashima had a culture of promoting and fostering referees regardless of their gender. This proximity to football facilitated the start of Hagio’s refereeing path.
“Perhaps it was because of my location, but I was lucky to be able to connect so quickly,” she says, referring to the coworkers who soon introduced her to the football association.
Hagio was registered as an international assistant referee (AR) in 2015 by soundly continuing to accumulate achievements, eventually becoming a match-appointed AR at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She still stays active in the top level for women in Japan today. “It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it,” she says, looking back on her path outside the company.
Hagio is sincerely grateful for the colleagues and management who accommodate her work-life balance. Early visualization and sharing of tasks, negotiation of adjustments, and covering for one another were vitally important while she was away from the office. Preparing solutions in advance in case of unexpected problems was a chance to generate key options and new positive ideas.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone involved in. It’s safe to say it was very stressful [for my coworkers]. Without everyone’s cooperation, my success and career as a referee would not have been possible.”
Regarding the balance of work and refereeing, Hagio says, “We only live once. Time is limited and never returned. I believe I was conscious of delineating my purpose and goals, communication in turning points, time use, and focusing on my role within my control. Both paths help me aspire to be alive and well in my axiology.” The experience and knowledge gained through work are put to better use in her refereeing activities, and the energy gained from refereeing is utilized in her work.

8moFantastic to read about this. My 16 years old daughter referees at grass roots level in the UK so seeing the progress other female referees can make is an inspiration. Keep up the good work Maiko ⚽️🇯🇵
