Banff Pork Seminar 2024

Banff Pork Seminar 2024

Pig Director Mick O Connell and Innovation & Development Manager, Dr Marian Scott attended the Banff Pork Seminar 2024 this week and have shared some takeaway thoughts from the excellent presentations.

A breakout session by Dr Mike Tokach (Kansas State University) and Luc Dufresne (Demeter Veterinary Services) discussed weaned pig management, with zinc oxide removal in the EU/UK gaining attention. As an area Devenish have been working in over the past six years, it was great to see it being discussed outside of the EU where the bans applies.

Thinking beyond the feed

Dr Mike Tokach identified a range of key management changes required when removing zinc including the environment, and reduction of stressors.

Dr Tokach discussed that genetic differences exist for post-weaning feed intake capacity.

Devenish's new EnteriMAX diets offer range of solutions to suit unique circumstances on individual farms, and zinc-free feed programs can be tailored to meet specific needs as you can see from our diet selection chart.

The importance of supporting the gastrointestinal tract

An interesting infographic was presented by Luc Dufresne on gastrointestinal tract development.

Dr Marian Scott has previously highlighted how creep feeding in the farrowing room can help to support gut maturity by supporting the establishment of villi.
