Barbie Steps Up Her Game, Unveils New Campaign At A WNBA Event
Mattel’s Barbie is revitalizing its slogan "You Can Be Anything" with the launch of a new campaign called “Give Limitless Possibilities,” which illustrates the benefits of doll play in all its forms, like joyful, imaginative, and sometimes messy.
The new campaign “Give Limitless Possibilities” celebrated former WNBA player and legend Sue Bird as the 2024 Barbie Role Model. This campaign also centers around empathy, self-expression, and confidence, the qualities that the 65-year-old Barbie brand hopes to instill in children. This initiative, which started at the recent WNBA game, aims to redefine “what it means to give a Barbie” to someone.
Executives at Mattel emphasize that Barbie has always been an athlete and sports fan, noting that “Barbie has never been afraid to trade in her heels for sneakers,” they said. Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and global head of dolls at Mattel, said that Barbie is the best when she connects with different cultures. She is classic and timely, as she highlights current trends by pushing the boundaries. She also said that we strive so hard to keep Barbie up-to-date in today’s world to reflect what kids and families see in the world around them.

The new campaign “Give Limitless Possibilities” premiered at the Chicago Sky versus Indiana Fever WNBA game. The Barbie-themed night included activities like pre-game panel discussion, custom Barbie x Chicago Sky Sherpa belt bag giveaways, Barbie Hawaiian shirts, hair braiding stations featuring Barbie’s signature power pink shade, and a photo booth.
Berger also said that Barbie’s debut in a women's basketball event helps to spread the brand’s commitment to empowerment and showcasing role models by promoting its “if you see it, you can be it” philosophy.
Barbie’s 65th anniversary celebration festivities continue with the launch of various products during International Women’s Day, such as dolls depicting iconic women and female athletes from around the world, including Venus Williams, several sports-themed dolls, and new career dolls that include a farm vet, pop star, and astronaut. Barbie has highlighted over 250 careers through its dolls over its lifetime.
