Battling the Engagement Crisis and Averting the Great Resignation 2.0

Battling the Engagement Crisis and Averting the Great Resignation 2.0

Happy Friday! I hope you are sipping your favorite beverage, possibly hiding from yet another Zoom call. Today, we need to have a serious chat about something that’s causing more sleepless nights than a binge-watch of the latest hit series—employee engagement. Or, should I say, the lack thereof?

The Engagement Crisis: A Silent Productivity Killer

In today’s cutthroat workplace jungle, employees want more than just a paycheck. They crave respect, a sense of purpose, and—surprise, surprise—a little acknowledgment and appreciation. And if they don’t get it? Well, they’re not shy about taking their talents elsewhere.

The Great Resignation 2.0: A Looming Threat

If you think the Great Resignation was a one-time fluke, brace yourself for its potentially more dramatic sequel: The Great Resignation 2.0. The script is already being written by disengaged employees who are eyeing the exit door. Gallup tells us that disengaged employees are costing the global economy a staggering $8.8 trillion in lost productivity. That’s more than enough to fund a space mission to Mars—and back!

Culture is not an Art, it's a Science!

The Hidden Costs of Disengaged Employees

Here’s what happens when your employees are disengaged:

  • 37% higher absenteeism (They’re just not that into you...or their jobs)
  • 49% more accidents (Because they’re daydreaming of better workplaces)
  • 60% more errors and defects (Quality? What quality?)
  • 18% lower productivity (Steaming at work, anyone?)
  • 16% lower profitability (Ouch!)
  • 37% lower job growth (Stuck in a rut)
  • 65% lower share price over time (Investors, look away now)

Recognizing the Disengaged

Disengaged employees can be a bit like stealth ninjas—they’re hard to spot but deadly to your business. Some signs include a decline in productivity, an increase in small errors, and a general air of “meh” around the office. Then there are the actively disengaged—the ones who make it their mission to spread doom and gloom.

Why Employees Disengage

Disengagement is not a one-size-fits-all issue, but there are some common culprits: poor leadership, lack of autonomy, zero growth opportunities, and—perhaps the easiest to fix—lack of recognition.

Acknowledgement and Appreciation: Your Secret Weapons

Employees are simple creatures. They want to be recognized for their hard work. According to Quantum Workplace, employees are 2.7 times more likely to be highly engaged if they believe management will recognize them. And yet, only 1 in 3 U.S. workers say they received any praise in the past week. It’s time to change that.

How to Recognize and Appreciate Your Team

  1. Keep it Simple: Make recognition easy and frequent. Don’t overcomplicate it.
  2. Public and Private Praise: Acknowledge achievements both publicly and privately.
  3. Be Timely: Don’t wait until the annual review to say “thank you.”
  4. Personalize It: Tailor recognition to what makes each employee feel valued.
  5. Go Beyond Money: Symbolic awards can be more motivating than cash bonuses.

Great post! The stats on disengaged employees are shocking. That $8.8 trillion figure is mind-boggling. It's clear that investing in employee engagement isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a business imperative. I wonder if we're underestimating the impact of disengagement on innovation and problem-solving too?
