Le Corbusier           Vers une Architecture 1923

As practicing architects we were asked to make an architectural response to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Bauhaus Art School so we have reached for a quotation from le Corbusier, an architect who never visited the German school. Why? The development of modern architecture after the first world war was a communal enterprise involving a network of pioneering architects and designers across Europe who influenced, encouraged and inspired each other. The early writings of le Corbusier were very influential in developing the ideas and curriculum of the Bauhaus and Corb’s quote succinctly sums up the formal objectives of architecture. We imagine that Walter Gropius must have thought, “I wish I had said that”.

We have been guided in this sculpture by the Bauhaus idea of Gesamtkunstwerk or ‘total work of art’, which brings together many disciplines and designers in one piece using cubic, linear and geometric forms. The ‘beton brut’ concrete objects are loosely based on the iconic Bauhaus chess set no.XIV by Josef Hartwig but used to create a notional cityscape lit from above - the “architectural masses brought together in light”. The nine pieces also represent the chess set and illustrate the Bauhaus notion of ‘form follows function’ as the shape of each piece demonstrates it’s movement across the board.

The light falling on the masses is modulated by a fuse glass panel of abstract geometric design in the manner of Josef Albers. There are also two fused glass side panels in same style.
