BD’s long-term strategy stands up to the greatest challenge
This week at the 39th Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, I had the opportunity to share my perspective on why BD has been able to continue to advance our long-term strategy and value-creation journey while emerging as an essential partner to healthcare providers and governments in the global response to COVID-19. In short, our pandemic response was enabled by our long-term strategy, and our COVID-related innovations will help advance our long-term success.
At BD, we have built a global med-tech leader with a market-leading portfolio empowered by several unique capabilities and unmatched breadth, scale, and reach. About 90% of all U.S. hospital inpatients will receive care using a BD device, and about 70% of all U.S. acute hospitals have BD connectivity and data platforms installed. Our team of over 2,000 software engineers and data scientists is leveraging connectivity and data platforms like these to help enable our customers to drive greater efficiencies and inform clinical decisions. This makes our company a top strategic partner to most healthcare systems today, even as we continue to expand our innovation pipeline into adjacent, high-growth markets.
The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed us to further strengthen our relationships with our customers as we provide them with solutions across the continuum of care, from diagnosis to treatment to prevention. For example, we have an established leadership in digitally-read rapid testing through our BD Veritor platform. We have always been proud of our manufacturing expertise and capabilities, but with the urgency of the pandemic, the incredible execution of our teams and leveraging our BD Production Systems, we substantially increased our test manufacturing capacity. Prior to COVID, we made roughly 8 million Veritor Flu tests in an average year; we are now manufacturing 10 million Veritor tests per month, and expect to increase to about 12 million tests per month by March. We’ve also increased capacity of such critical-to-COVID products as our BD Max systems and tests, IV sets, and syringes for vaccine delivery.
As we move forward, we are increasing our investments and strengthening our pipeline across three innovation themes that leverage our core strengths:
- First, we are applying smart devices, robotics, and analytics & AI to improve care processes.
- Second, we are enabling new care settings to enhance patient experience and lower costs.
- And third, we are investing to improve diagnosis and treatments of chronic diseases.
We believe these themes represent a significant opportunity to create impactful new innovations and solutions across our business, and the pandemic may have accelerated some of these trends. We have been funding some related projects for some time, some were acquired, and others have received incremental funding from our Veritor COVID-19 testing proceeds.
Our COVID response highlights the deep capabilities that we’ve been building for years, the advantages of our diverse portfolio of solutions, and our team’s agility in responding to healthcare’s most significant crisis in generations—and it hasn’t moved us off our long-term value creation strategy. That’s why BD has started this fiscal year with strong momentum, and with our outstanding team and proven ability to execute and innovate, we expect to emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever.
