MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT

November 20th was the annual observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). It honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives have been lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. With violence against transgender people and transgender people of color on the rise, it is imperative to shed light on this day and its powerful meaning.  

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) began in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith when she held a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Additionally, the week before TDOR, people and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise visibility for transgender people and address issues the community faces.

The Philadelphia Finance Team volunteered at the Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance! Since 1990, MANNA volunteers have come together from all different backgrounds to help prepare food, pack containers and deliver meals directly to the doorsteps of Philadelphians living with serious illnesses.
