I’m going to argue against my interests…but in yours.
If you are with a good company and have a good job, staying is a good option.
I don’t mean for you to sit still and stagnate in your job. I’m not telling you not to keep looking. But I am telling you that there is probably more opportunity in your situation than you are seeing. Unless this is affecting your health (see a doctor), try a month-long experiment for me.
- Ask yourself: What am I going through the motions on, and how can I shift my attitude towards this work? I know, the seemingly mundane tasks aren’t exciting to you, but hear me out and try this. Take a notepad to work and write down everything you do for a month. How many people are you responsible for? How do you manage them? What kind of training have you led or received? How big is your budget or your department? What software do I use? What soft skills do I exhibit well?
- Once a week, integrate this information into your resume, even if it makes your resume too long. You can edit it down later. See what progress you have made since when you started. See what tasks you could do better. See what duties you might like to learn and add.
- Check into available listings in your company that you might be interested in. Record the job requirements and see how you match up today. Ascertain what you can do to better match up in the next 6 months to a year.
- Check into your benefits and training allowance. If you get your gym membership paid for, get one and use it. If you can take classes - online or in person - and be reimbursed, please take advantage of the opportunity. Take courses that get you skills and certifications that benefit you both today and tomorrow.
- Reach out to potential mentors and learn more about what is possible for you. Mentor other employees that you see working hard. Build sincere relationships with your co-workers and you will find great future Allie’s in all of your endeavors.
- Your work today is your best advertisement for your prospects tomorrow. Please maintain a strong effort, a positive attitude, and a growth mindset, and you will be great!
