The Beauty of the AGAVE.
Tequila is an alcoholic drink produced by the blue agave plant – when navigating your tequila options at your local bottle store you will probably come across 3 main types being:
1 – Blanco (White or Silver )Tequila- This type of tequila is rested for no more than 60days ,if they are aged at all. This unaged tequila gives the drinker the rawest most pure taste of agave and has a distinct earthly flavour, Silver tequila is mostly used for mixing and goes well with any tequila cocktail.
2 – Reposado Tequila ( Gold Tequila )- This type of tequila is aged in wood casks form 2 – 12 months , the wood barrels help to mellow out the flavour of the pure Blanco and impart a softer oaky flavour to the agave as well as giving the tequila it light straw colour.
It has also become popular for distilleries to age their tequilas in used bourbon barrels which add a different dimension to the finish taste.
3 – Anejo Tequila ( Old Tequila ) – These Tequilas are aged primarily in old bourbon barrels for a minimum 1 year to 3 years which in turn produces a darker more robust spirit. These tequilas tend to be extremely smooth with subtle underlying tones of caramel.
