The Beauty of Living a “Boring” Life – How To Find Happiness In The Now

The Beauty of Living a “Boring” Life – How To Find Happiness In The Now

Building your One-Man Brand on LinkedIn exposes you to a lot of other people's success.

You instantly begin to compare where you are, to where they are, and that often discourages you, rather than motivating you.

But, why does this happen?

It's because you believe that your happiness lies over there, in the exciting realms of 100K followers, $1M dollars in the bank, overseas trips and endless freedom.

And not having that yourself, creates this insane rush of anxiety and frustration, and you begin to ask yourself...

"Why aren't I there yet? Why am I not growing faster? What am I doing wrong?"

I had these thoughts too, but having reached financial freedom at 27, and having travelled all around the world, I can tell you for a fact that "over there" doesn't make you more happy.

Because...

Once you get "over there" you'll create a new "even further over there" and the cycle continues.

Again and again.

So…

It’s not about chasing happiness, viral posts and big followers.

It's about designing your current lifestyle to make sure that you are happy right now

In fact...

Last week I wrote about “The 4x4 Work Week” which allowed me more time and energy to enjoy life, while producing greater outcomes for my one-man brand and my client's one-man brands, in half the time.

I restructured my day and week to align with what I desired the most - freedom and results.

Through this process I realised that, true happiness?

→ It's about optimising your life for right now, to suit your personal desires without being attached to your goals.

→ It's in the everyday tasks and "boring" routines that bring you peace and joy.

→ It’s in all the small daily wins that add up over time to create something extraordinary.

The irony?

Living this way gets you to that 100K follower and $1M in the bank much much faster

Why?

Because if you enjoy the present moment, you’re gaining more energy, satisfaction and motivation to do more AND go further

In other words…

It allows you to be consistent and outlast everyone else that's chasing the highs and being met with the constant lows.

Just look at this graph I created to simplify this idea:

A core wisdom of Buddhism is that all unhappiness lies in attachment - one of those attachment is "the future".

By being attached to your future, and rushing your life to achieve a high, you're unintentionally making yourself even more unhappy right now.

This is because you're telling yourself "I'll be happy when...", and dangling your own happiness in front of you like a carrot on a stick.

A stick that you're holding in your own hands.

I mean just take a look around you...

Everyone is trying to sprint their marathon.

And eventually, they'll burnout and quit

How many times have you seen that, or experienced it yourself?

I know I have.

So don’t be like them anymore.

Jog it, walk it, crawl it.

The slower and more intentional you are, the longer you go.

And the longer you go, the more chances you give yourself to succeed.

And I'm a clear example of that...

Having hit 5k followers and $5K profit after 5.5 weeks on LinkedIn of doing the "boring" day to day stuff (which I personally love).

Despite the initial crickets, I kept getting better and kept building every single day.

But guess what?

This wasn't an overnight success as it might seem to you.

I spent the last 10 YEARS helping universities and other startups build their brands like this, and I finally decided to build my own. This is 10 years in the making of daily consistent effort leading to concentrated execution.

Daily consistent effort over time always produces results.

So stop chasing your own carrot stick, and start living in the present moment.

Become consistent, and focus only on your daily wins.

Remember that…

→ The now is a gift.

→ The now is kinda boring.

→ But the now is goddamn beautiful.

Choose happiness today.

Yes, Choose happiness now. Choose happiness in each stage. Waiting until you get to a specific point to allow yourself to be happy is dangerous. What if you never get to "that point" will you be permanently unhappy? Nice distinctions here William Jay Choi.

Totally relate. Embracing boredom is so crucial. We are taught to be ‘busy’ but never to be present. An essential life skill, I would say. William Jay Choi

I can relate William Jay Choi! Thanks for reaffirming that growth takes consistent effort over a long period of time, but if you persist the success will come.

I agree, we are on our own journey. We need to look inward and determine what truly matters.
