Becoming the Patron of a Charity

I very recently had the honour of being asked to become the patron of a charity called Team Evie.

Such a wonderful cause set up in memory of Evie Johnston with a mission to help sick children and their families who face similar challenges to those Evie faced in her all too short life.

They achieve this by raising vital funds to buy equipment and training to support patients plus 20 different wards and medical teams across the North East of England and Cumbria.

I was having a catch up with Evie’s Dad – Greg Johnston – about a few things and out came the question about becoming a patron.

I was rather taken aback, stunned and very flattered.

I said I’d check it over with my business partner even though she laughed and said that I am the MD of Inspiration North so can decide for myself! It's always good to have your partner on board isn't it?!

So, I got back to Greg to say how thrilled I would be to accept the kind offer.

I think what was happening was a clash between what I had perceived as to whom patrons of charities are and where I fit into this role.

The patrons I knew and had seen were all typically famous in some regard and/or wealthy.

I’m neither of those. Yet.

So, how could I possibly become a charity patron?

My perception combined with some imposter syndrome being voiced internally, meant getting my head around this.

I always like Richard Branson’s quote about if someone offers you an amazing opportunity, but you are not sure you can do it, say yes, then learn how to do it later.

Through our Inspiration North and Work Pirates events in 2020, we have been donating money to the charity, so felt I could ask some very open questions about the offer.

When I discussed this further with Greg, it didn’t actually matter about not being famous or wealthy.

It was to tap into my head full of ideas, our ever-expanding network in business in the North East and beyond, plus having a get-shit-done approach to life and business.

Who knew that this could all be useful and valued by a charity and that I had a place!

*facepalm*

So, I am very excited to be part of the team and contributing to such a great cause and building on Evie’s legacy.

In the days ahead you will start to see some initiatives that will get the ball rolling.

If you would like to hear more about Team Evie and their mission, we recorded a podcast with Greg in 2019. Here is the link.

If you would like to get involved in any way or have some ideas, do get in touch with me or Greg. It’s amazing how initial chats can open doors to making things happen.
