Carterton District Council recently met to consider the Wellington Regional Growth Framework. The news report on the meeting indicates that the WRGF is going to Cabinet for approval. The fact that the framework is going to Cabinet suggests that the powers of the Urban Development Act 2020 are about to be employed. Among other things, Whenua Tapu cemetery may be about to be subject to high density housing development.

Despite the promises of protection for Maori land when the legislation was announced, the supposed protections were watered down immediately before the law was passed under urgency. Maori land interests are under great danger. Secret deals have been made around the country under the cover of Treaty Settlement offers. I urge all Maori landowners and shareholders to urgently pay attention to all development proposals and to consider how these developments might threaten their interests. Check the Land Information New Zealand title information for all your lands. Check how these compare to the records held by the Maori Land Court. Look carefully at all the land records on LINZ for Maori land incorporations. If you find errors, act collectively to check the registered title records. Access to LINZ records is expensive. This cost has discouraged the public from checking their land records. If you find errors in the land records demand answers from the Minister for Land Information, the Minister for Maori Development and the Prime Minister.

Maori land is at great risk from the Urban Development Agenda. This is not an accident. Maori land has been set up to be at risk. This is the greatest threat to Maori land interests since the 1967 amendment to the Maori Affairs Act 1953.
