Behavioural Design Matters / May 3, 2024

This is a newsletter for anyone interested in things related to – human behaviour, customer experience, innovation, design thinking, culture, etc. The links we share below are a collection of links or articles we found inspiring, insightful or thought provoking from these kinds of topics.

1. The curious stories of Indian Party Symbols (via Arvind Lodaya )

1962 was a general election year in India and the February issue of a Calcutta-based daily newspaper, Sanmarg, recalled the interesting stories of candidates that had gone to great lengths to be identified with their election symbols. A man with an elephant as his election symbol campaigned on a living elephant. The animal had been taught to put the paper sheets in a box attached to it, to suggest the people they should do the same at the ballot box. A man with a tiger as his symbol went on the campaign trail accompanied by a caged tiger.

2. Future Menus Trend Report by Unilever Food Solutions (via Revati Thakur )

There are many trends reports in the market but what makes the UFS Future Menu Trends Report unique is how practical and hands-on it is. It’s purposely designed to allow chefs to incorporate on-trend dishes that guests will love into their menus, immediately.

Our talented worldwide team of 250 UFS chefs were in the lead in the production of the report, offering tips, techniques, short online demos and trainings, UFS product hacks and cost-efficient applications. However, the icing on the cake is the many delicious recipes included. Each has been developed by our chefs and is exactly on trend with what diners want today.

Here's the official UFS global launch video:

3. Mathematics explains why non-conformists always end up looking alike (via Tanvi Gupta )

Anti-conformists have an odd way of ending up looking like each other. A Brandeis mathematician looks at how this synchronicity occurs. Understanding the mechanism behind non-conformist conformity has applications in other areas, like the stock market.

4. The Anger Toolkit (for children aged 3-9)

A printable package designed to help children aged 3-9 who experience anger. This printable features over 30 engaging worksheets, colouring pages, activities and printable posters created by a team of child therapists and early childhood educators!

Being mad isn’t bad. Our job isn’t to stop our kids from being angry; it’s to teach them HOW to be angry.

With The Anger Toolkit, your child will learn how to express their anger in healthy ways, they’ll learn how to use calming tools to cool their body down when they are filled with anger, they’ll begin to learn how to problem solve to avoid situations that might cause them to feel angry, and as you go through the toolkit together, you’ll gain insights into nurturing their emotional well-being.

5. Modern Retail (in India) and Supermarkets in a Box

SuperK is the fastest growing supermarket chain in Andhra Pradesh, driven by its mission to bring modern retail experiences to the tier 3 and beyond towns of India. If you have the capital and the mindset to start a business then SuperK helps you across all the steps - from store setup to procurement, operations, financial management, and demand generation. The entrepreneur (franchise owner) runs the supermarket, and SuperK owns the consumer facing brand (and that’s why they call themselves a ‘supermarket chain’).

I think this is a fantastic idea - and when I read about it, I realised it hits on a lot of themes I talk about in this (Indian Pivot) newsletter vis a vis the India 2 consumer and how to monetise.
